Here's Mick Doohan's take on the championship contenders. A transcript of a
    motogp.com video.

"I think it's good, I think it's quite healthy, obviously the new machines
have worked out as everyone had hoped they would, with the four-strokes,
and, you know, it's good now to see some younger guys coming through. For
me, the other guys had been there for too long, with too many opportunities,
but still doing nothing with them, so it's good to see the young Pedrosas
and the Stoners, Vermeulens, and a few other guys coming through and
hopefull they'll continue to come through and we'll get the next generation
and the next super-stars coming through.

"For this season, you know, it's difficult, it would be good to see Pedrosa
have a good finish, you know, if he could actually win the championship in
the first year that would be amazing, but, realistically, I think it's going
to difficult, again, for anyone to beat Valentino Rossi because, you know,
in the past he's won with so many points up his sleeve; he's had a bit of a
bad run to the halfway point, but it's still a long way to go in the series,
and he's always mentally strong and he never gives up, so we'll see. I think
there's still -- these younger guys still need to learn a few more tricks."

I'm pretty sure he retired. The article shows him sitting on Rossi's bike
with a very satisfied look on his face, and Jeremy Burgess in the
background, who was his crew chief during his world championships.
I missed that. What did he say?

  3. My guess is that dispite his championship lead (and most probable win) they
don't expect to see Hayden do any better than this. Meaning podiums and
other good results, but not as a race winner and Honda has had their share
of those (Biaggi, Gibernau, Criville,Barros). That Hayden win now is a very
nice bonus but nothing to bet the future on. They probably consider this
seson as an exception with so many incidents and don't expect that will
repeat next year, actually I guss they doubt Hayden can do nearly as well
next year. The young guns get better and more consistent and Rossi are there
    as well.
Pedrosa are winning in his first season, he's actually doing better than
Rossi did in his first year. While it wouldn't look as impressive with rossi
in the top fight (Rossi din't have any ledgend to fight either) it still
look so much better for the future than Hayden does. That's the value of
    expectations.

Pedrosa never rode a 500, either...
