As a few here know I have a Cholesterol problem due to a missing DNA
bond. In simple terms unmedicated if I lived on bread and water my
Cholesterol would be around 25-30. The accepted norm these days is
4-4.5 ish. Luckily with medication I am around 3.5- 3.7.
Seems I now have high blood pressure, 179/97 at 74 bpm. So another
tablet to take. They suggest I drop a stone or so ( 6 foot 1, 14 stone
12 lb) from my waist and go back to cycling to work two or three
times a week. All of that I can deal with its the no more than 2 units
of Alcohol in any 24 hours. I'm not a big drinker, can't do it any
more and I resent the lost time the next day, but 2 units FFS. You do
more than that on a visit to TOGs house before you have got past the
    pre food nibbles.

You lucky, lucky bastard. I'm currently allowed no alcohol whatsoever. I'm
going flippin' mad. Can't have a smoke either. Double bastard.

And the operation's not until the 14th April. Then observation time in
hospital + when I get out the wife's bound to nag me to death if I so much
as stand next to a smoker. Lucky she knows for a fact that I'm going back on
the pop as soon as I'm out of hospital.

Off out now for a sin or 2. Yuk.

    In communiqué
That really is asking a bit much. Best switch from Bathams to red plonk
    then.

    you clumsy ****
Indeed. However, as you state, the lifestyle amendments are a *suggestion*.
If your medic is just following the advice at
    http://www.patient.co.uk/health/Recommended-Safe-Limits-of-Alcohol.htm then
I'd tend to go, "la-la-la-la, not listening." On the other hand, if
presented with some compelling evidence that 3 units of alcohol would make
me physically ill then I'd have grave concerns over my mental well being
and go, "la-la-la-la, not listening" for a while before reducing the claret
intake by 2-3 bottles a week.

If I decided to observe the 2 units per day limit then I'd abstain at home
and just not buy the stuff, have the occasional drink when out and the odd
    boozy week when on holiday.

Good points. Always worth remembering that a lot of medical advice is based
on very flimsy evidence or on reduction of relative probabilities rather
    than absolute probabilities.
For example, saying that cutting your alcohol intake to 2 units will reduce
your chance of an alcohol related death by 30% might sound impressive but
is less so if you know that at ones current intake say, you chance is only
5% in the first place (so you're looking at a miserable future to improve
your odds by less than 2%.

I've made up the figures but the principle applies to a lot of medical
    advice.
