Whats the deal then? I'v Googled and it appears that Uvex make them but
that they aren't available here. Does anybody else make them and if not,
    why?

It's because you have to have a door fitted at the same time otherwise
    it's far too expensive.

Uvex only make them for Uvex helmets. They are available, you just
    have to look hard.

There are others, as there are inserts - try googling for Fog City.

Bought one a couple of years ago from Moores in Hemel Hempstead, a
wonderful hat. I was comfy, kept the visor and my specs mist free and
stopped a potentialy very big headache when it said hello to the hard
stuff with a bang. Ruined the hat of course but it did what it says on
the tin, bloody good insurance. Just sad I couldn't afford to replace
it with another, as already said expensive. So went for the Lazer
Revolution instead even better at being mist free but not as good at
the other stuff. Happily don't know what it's like when falling off
    (yet).

My brother road-tested his Revolution with an 80mph face-plant, & his
chin's still in the right place, so I wouldn't worry too much.

IME the best place to get Uvex lids is the shows. I bought one from Moores
IIRC (Hemel) and my last one from the BMF Tail End last September.

Comfy, quiet, virtually mist free. The first one's lining wore quite badly,
I have a stiff beard, but teh new one seems to be more robust.

That's good to know, but if you don't mind I'll try not to put it to
the test. Glad your brother can still smile though.
