DR 650 - Suzuki

I have a 1999 Suzuki DR 650 with only 4000 miles on it. I went to
start it the other day and the only thing that happened was a
clicking/spinning noise. I removed the starter and everything looked
fine so I removed the outer case cover and found the machined area in
the case that holds the shaft that the idler gear spins on is broken
on both the outer case cover and the inner engine case.

Anyway I took it to the dealer and they said it was broken and I would
have to replace the complete case to repair it - yet they could not
explain why this would ever happen for any reason. The dealer also
called Suzuki to ask for some "Goodwill" help on the parts and Suzuki
    said no.

I also called Suzuki to ask for some Goodwill help and an explaination
on why this failure happened. The customer service guy told me - no
help and I can't talk with a tech guy...

This is very frustrating - has anybody ever experienced this type of
failure on a Suzuki - if so what was the outcome.

I think Suzuki should pay for a new case - unless I did something to
make it break - what do you think?

    Thanks for your help,
