    Gidday peoples ,

I am thinking of getting a DriRider jacket , but don't really know which
one to get because there are about 3 - 4 different types of jackets.

So what type of DriRider jacket does everybody use ?.

Does it make that much a difference if the jacket is the shorter Highway
jacket or one of the longer ones like the Nordic ?

Also , do you buy the jacket a little bit larger so that you can wear
thicker clothes underneath the jacket ?
    I live in Perth .

    Thanks

  2. There's heaps more than four; get a catalogue from a dealer (I know
the Honda Shop in Midland has them) and go try some on.

I've used a Nordic and an Xtreme.

I think the Nordic might be a bit too warm in the warmer weather for
Perth, the Xtreme seems a fraction better with the liner out.

How much you wear under it depends on how cold you get.

DriRider Arctic (top of the line) on special around Mel (RRP 629, sale
    $399).
It's got the works, CE armour as well, plus vents front and back for when it
    gets warm.
For Perth you'd most probably get away with a T-shirt underneath the
    built-in liner.
Don't buy too big, otherwise it flaps around (sleeves mostly).

I bought a Nordic a month ago. Its great at the moment because its winter,
but I can see its lack of ventilation will make it too hot when summer hits
here in Brissie. I've ridden with it on some cold nights (around 3-4C) and
with the liner in its great. On warmer days (around 25C) I've ridden without
the liner and it gets sweaty around the burbs. I'm not sure what other
jackets are available, but I suggest you look at something with vents.

Since we don't zip the jacket to the pants like on leathers, the other issue
is "scratch protection". The Nordic is a long jacket with straps that go
under your ribs to stop the jacket riding up if you slide on it. Not sure
how effective that is in an actual accident, but it feels pretty secure.

Also I can tell you in heavy rain the Nordic passes with flying colours.

So the issues to look at are vents, scratch protection, waterproofing and of
course price (Nordic was $260). Everything I've heard indicates the best
protection is from armoured leathers, but everything is a compromise. It
depends what sort of riding you are going to do, where and what the climate
as to what you pick. Good luck!

    Cheers

The Arctic jacket sounds good , but I was looking for a jacket for
under $400 and the prices in Perth are a little bit more than on the
    east coast .

A $250 DriRider jacket on the east coast costs $365 in Perth.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

Thanks , I will check out the Xtreme , the Nordic looks OK , and it
would be good for the colder times in Perth , especially lately with all
the rain and fairly cold nights of 4c - 6c temps.

Umm decide which one you want. Go to your local accessories shop and try
it on to find what size you are.
Take note then go home and promptly purchase it over the internet from
somewhere on the eastern seaboard :)

Yup, try out the arctic, mark size and colour prefs, sent me a mail and I'll
    post it across.
$10 postage or so should cover that part.
Or call Brian at BikeMart in Ringwood once you got the size and deal with
    him directly.

The cheaper the jacket, the less versatile.

meaning that you won't be able to wear it for as much of the year.

This shuoldn't bother you overmuch - hunt pawnshops and the Quokka for
2nd hand leather jackets that will do the summer job. You can handle
summer rain with a simple waterproof overjacket like they use for
sailing, hunt one up 2nd hand.

Have a look at the Rivet Charger from www.motorcyclegear.com.au

Haven't worn one myself, but it looks like a reasonable deal.
www.maw.com.au do mailorder too, and their prices are good.

    I bought a Dri-Rider dri-mesh jacked when I got my license, and it's been
    great. <http://www.motorcyclemart.com.au/item.php?idx=1077&section=onRoad>.
You should be able to get it for $299 in Perth, or from that website.

In summer, take the liner out and you can get around with just a shirt
underneath, no sweating. In winter, you want the jacket+liner as well as a
jumper yourself to stay warm. I've ridden in quite a few storms, and my
jeans get saturated compared to anything that I've got on underneath the
jacket (with liner in of course).

Downside is it's not as long as others, so is more bomber-jacket style, but
on the flipside, this means you can wear it pretty much anywhere anytime and
    not look like a dick.

The little pocket on the left wrist is a great place to keep your bike keys.

One of the reasons I asked people for what DriRider jacket they wear is
to find out what is the most popular jacket people use so that I could
hazard a guess to what is worn most of the year so that I could buy just
one jacket to wear all year round.

At the moment I am wearing just a plain old Bluey Jacket (bomber style )
with a nylon outer shell , while it keeps me warm , it is not made for
riding bikes and it has a metal zipper that has scratched my fuel tank ,
so I am looking for a proper riding jacket with a nylon zipper.

There is no such thing. Those of us who ride all year round have more
than one jacket. OTherwise you get too hot or too cold. (Too hot is
better than too cold, you can take it off in the real heat, you can't
    stop hypothermia.)

I used to uset he dri rider in winter and leather in summer, I now have
a rivet mesh jacket for summer, which is more comfortable than the
    leather.

OK, those of us who ride in many different climates, and don;t want to
suffer being wet, cold, or sweaty...

Riding in leather in the wet is bad for the leather after all.
