Driving Licence Offence Codes

I've just had my licence returned by Essex Magistrates following a little
speeding offence back in February. I was caught on the A127 which is a dual
carriageway and a NSL but the muppets at the court have put a SP50 code on
my licence. Looking at the DVLA website, SP50 means exceeding the speed
limit on a motorway, which clearly the A127 is not.

So I assume they have cocked up unless anyone can tell me different.

I am not too bothered about this as whatever happens the fine and points
will be the same unless it is going to affect my insurance. Does anyone know
if insurers will rate a SP50 different to a SP30?

  2. sounds that way.
I'd have thought that SP50 is probably less likely to bother an insco.
That said, most don't load for a single SP offence, in my experience anyway.

I got the same, on an A road in '98...

I'm also not entirely sure it was the right code (SP30 Exceeding
statutory speed limit on public road was the one I'd expect...) Seeing
as I got a fixed penalty for an average of 93 with a peak of 112 I
wasn't going to complain too much though.

  4. Well that is strange. Part of the process of explaining what led to my
ban to inscos was telling them the offences that led up to it. I gave
dates and codes for two, but when it came to 6 points and £125 for
speeding on a SP30 they said you can't have 6 points on a SP30 and said
I had to have a SP50 instead. Cunts.

Obviously not on the bike then.

When I got the SP50 it was 3 points, £40, and a "you were driving
perfectly safely, but I have to fine anyone seen doing over 100... it's
policy" from the traffic sergeant that booked me.. Fair play though, he
did say "if you'd floored it I'd not have caught you"

    FOYRNB.

Plus, I'm not as slow as I was... actually I'd like a sportsbike again
    next year.

Well, other than the speeding bit.

I think - occassionally - that the number that comes after the SP bit is the
speed limit that you were breaking at the time. As usual I await someone to
come up with the correct answer and put me in my place.

I wasn't trying to put anyone in their place - I just "happen" to have that bookmarked. :)

Not for any particular reason, you understand.

I wonder what the record is for most categories on one licence? Any offers?
