I *hate* going to the dentist....

Can't feel the left side of my face....

Still, only one filling - not bad, given I've not been for a checkup for
about 5 years and have been staving off the effects of a decaying tooth
    since Jan this year.

KNow how you feel, although they're not so bad nowadays.
Ah, so UK dentists haven't caught on to the modern world of local
anaesthetics yet then? The ones that completely numb the tooth, the
whole tooth and nothing but the tooth.
Only that long? I finally got round to going back to the dentist
earler this year when the 'temporary' crown he'd fitted crumbled into
small pieces. FFS it had only been in fr 18 months.

    eat".

  5. Nope - that's me :)

Although I have now largely stopped the painkillers. Except for
    migraines.

I went yesterday for a check up, I'd booked the appointment in May! I need a
filling, and guess what - my appointment is in February!

What is the world coming to?

It's going to get MUCH worse. When the new contract for NHS dentists
comes out (currently April 2006) it is estimated that 60% of dentists in
the NHS will leave. Practices with mixed lists (is NHS and private) are
being encouraged to go exclusively private because any patient with such
a practice, whether NHS or not, will be able to demand to be seen on the
NNHS (if the treatment plan allows)

My SO is leaving dentistry altogether after 18 years in the NHS

Tis bad in Wilts - took me from Jan till Oct to find a dentist who was
taking on any new patients. As it happens, the old Bee-luck has held out
and I've managed to, quite by accident, get the dentist who was recommended
to me all that time ago.

I'm Salisbury area - Amesbury to be precise. Yep, I'd recommend looking
*way* before you need to. There is a website that you can look at to see
what dentists are taking on new NHS patients in Wilts (think there's one for
    Hants too).

Why _does_ anyone use NHS dentists anyway?

Plus they'll be sadistic bastards if my experience of Swindon dentists
is anything to go by. I've tried three now - all of whom were evil. I
doubt I'll be trying any more.

the dentist nearest my house is an NHS dentist, I went there, had a
check up, and that was it, on the list.

    No issues at all.

  17. Much cheapness.

Mind you a non-NHS one isn't an onerous burden - my check today cost
£35 and the last lot of fillings cost £90. Not exactly breaking the
    bank!

It's about 20 years since NHS dentists neede paying too, unless you're
unemployed, pregnant, etc. For most people the only difference is that
their prices are controlled and, in practice, their equipment and
techniques are much less up-to-date, as seen here.
Well yes, but what are you gonna do? Move somewhere without an NHS,
perhaps? I'm not convinced it's all better, TBH. I know I pay a lot
more for our mandatory private health insurance that I ever did in NI
and I still have to pay the first 1500 CHF per year of most treatment.
