Dry Clutches

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Intact Kneeslider, Oct 27, 2003.

  1. Something I finally admitted to myself I can't figure out...

....how do the kit dry clutches they used to retrofit to SBK inline-4's come
together? Try as I might, I can't figure out how the outer clutch basket
couples to the primary drive gear on the crank while keeping oil from
    pissing out everywhere.

The way I can fathom it, there still has to be a big gear attached to the
outer clutch basket, and this has to be in an oil bath, so is it a case of,
moving outwards from the gearbox, the construction being:

Primary driven gear attached to a relatively thin, hollow (to accommodate
the gearbox input shaft) "transfer" shaft which passes through a hole, which
accommodates an oil seal, in the dry clutch outer housing and in turn
attaches to the outer clutch basket.

The transfer shaft would need to be thin to give the oil seal any hope of
working, but this would make it none-too-suited to handling the torsional
loads between the primary drive and the clutch...

Anyone ever see one in pieces? Daron?

I thought some Chinese person had invented some fantastic wet weather gear.

Don't they just run 'no' sump and this means all thats needed is a spray of
oil along the primary gear, for lube, which is easy, and sprays of oil
everywhere else there are gears? Removes the need for a sump and then it's
    remotely pumped and stored?

  4. Nope. The only dry-sump design in sbk that I can think of is the Aprilia.

Ducati for sure and possibly others put on deeper sumps to keep the sloshing
oil from drowning the crank etc, and, though I can't be arsed trawling for
the actual regs just now, I suspect the sbk rules specifically forbid
conversion of a wet-sump engine to a dry-sump... be hard to see why you'd
want to do it, too, as, if you did it, you'd be left with this vast empty
cavity at the bottom of your engine populated only by a slurping scavenge
pump, and you'd still have the problem of figuring out where to stick the
new oil tank you now need.
So how does that resolve the problem of oil pissing out all along the
circumference of the outer clutch basket if you rip out a bike's wet clutch
and replace it with a dry one?

  5. It probably slipped my mind due to the lack of success it met with in world
superbike... no surprise, though. 660 single against 1000cc twins and 750cc
    inline-fours...
    Aprilia.

MuZ using Yamaha 660 single was dry-sump.

Not often I get to say anything remotely connected with mechanical stuff.

Oh, well, more fool you. Next thing you know you'll be
claiming that Doohan's success at the Postie Bike Racing
    just 'slipped your mind', eh?

Yeah, I dunno about the dry clutch either.

Oh, the humiliation! I missed the WSBK reference.

You can bastardise me if you wish, you Balkan behemoth (just to teach me a
    lesson, of course).

  10. Or '99, rather. :)
He went world supersport racing in 2000.
Hell, yeah, they're around. Every four-cylinder 750 in WSB that I can think
of (R7, ZX-7RR, GSX-R750...) has had one fitted to replace the factory wet
clutch. Can't be sure now, but I reckon Lavilla's Alstare GSX-R1000, and
also possibly Gi Motorsport's R1's also had them this year... that's why I'm
    asking.
    Please...

I ran a Honda 350 with a dry sump once. And once is the operative
    word....
