gNatalie claims she's never seen "The Doctor, the Tornado and the Kentucky
Kid" so I dug it out the other day and it's rooted!
It won't play on any of our DVD players so I left it run on DVDdecrypter and
    it's currently 19 hours and 30% through with 9340 read-errors.
Disc looks perfect but it's obviously fucked-a-mundo....... what a rip.

Thanks for the tips folks but the disc hasn't got a scratch or a mark on it!
    (It's a store-bought DVD too, not a pirate)

I reckon this might be the mythical disc-rot!

  6. A few questions.
You cannot see any physical scratches on the disc? Hold it up to light
at an angle around 20 degrees to the plane of the disc.

Strangely enough, the cheapest DVD players are the best at playing
crap DVDs, so don't put it in your best DVD drive.

Tried doing a data dump then reburning the MPEG back to DVD?

OK; no spots or scratches but a sort-of "cloud"-line through one side.
I've tried it in the cheap and the fairly cheap so far. I m ight have to
take it to work to find a "good".
29000 errors and 48hours before I gave up at 6% through the 2nd VOB file.

In a previous incarnation, when I worked for a very large Japanese computer
manufacturer, they would warrant their optical disks for 10 years maximum.
After that, it was copy the whole shebang again.

....and these were hideously expensive systems, not cheap crappy consumer
    stuff.

    Ain't nuffink lasts forever.

  10. OK - well looking further down, 29000 errors could come from one line
    of the spin with ease.
    I reckon she's fucked mate . . .

I was thinking more along the lines of "time to write to the
    manufacturer...."

  15. Oh goodie. Disc delamination.

I've had that happen to too many store bought DVDs lately. They go that
way after a couple of years. So much for building up a library.

You should probably put those HDD platters back into the case before the
    dust gets to them!

    1000 / 9gb = 111 DVDs - not a very big library then ?

I converted all mine to Xvid to save space and plonked them all on a
single black box player. Takes a while to convert though- I'm only
    2/3rds through.

I just hope the originals don't deteriorate to badly

  18. Err - no. I didn't make copies, assuming that the originals would last.

Mirrored hard drives, eh? Sounds like a plan.

  19. I have made many copies of DVD9 movies without having to decrypt them and
get rid of the protection data
I can either put them onto a DVD9 disc or a DVD5, doesn't matter which
