How many of these Ducati 1098R models are being sold to the public?

Until I looked up the ducati website I was not aware that the 1098, 1098S
and 1098R have different engines, the first two being 1099cc, the R model
    being a 1198cc.

I was under the impression that the base 1098 model was the one used for
homologation. I presume then that the 1098R would need to be used for this
    purpose. Correct?

    Your impression is thus incorrect.

The new roles put a max of 1200cc on twins - given Ducati were still
negotiating up until not that long ago I suspect they had a fall back
plan of agreeing to 1100cc if they couldn't get 1200 over the line.
Indeed, the minimum homologation is now 3000 (up from 500) and hence
that's how many ducati need to build (not sell- refer
FoggyPetronas...), Aussie list price is 53K so I'm guessing they'll
only sell a couple of dozen here - I'd love to buy one myself but
y'know it's a bit hard to justify that sort of money on a bike to be
    ridden occasionally...

(seriously thinking about the 1098S though)

I like the specs but I'm struggling with the ugly though...

I intend to ride one when there is demo available though.
