Got any walls up yet, or is it still just one big hole?

But yes, if one's doing a new build, it seems ridiculous to be
thinking of these other solutions rather than just a full-on cellar.
Go with the French approach where the garages form part of the cellar
space and you don't even need a huge US-style footprint for
    cellar+garages+living space.

  4. Still the same. Only I've chomped threw a few more bottles of wine
without replenishing the stocks. Will have to get to winelibrary.com
    and place an order.

Well, you couldn't make this up.

The police cut the garage open, and took the bike.....

Someone reported my garage as having stolen bikes in it, apparently.

I've just gone postal on them, an inspector is calling me back this
    evening.

No wonder they said you wouldn't have to pay storage on it.

At least they're trying to stop bike theft in your area.

    Aye.

My initial kneejerk reaction to this when Steve told me earlier was
'fucking twats', but I suppose like you say, they were trying to do
    their job.

I guess it now swings on exactly where the 'intelligence' came from,
what quality it was and, most importantly, how much extra
investigation to substantiate how accurate it was before they took the
decision to hack their way into the garage, as to whether or not
    anyone needs their arse kicked.
Lets just hope there's no damage to the bike, then.

Because there wasn't before they 'recovered' it AFAIK...

What really annoys me is that they said 'we couldn't get hold of the
landlord' - despite him having stickers on all the vacant units with 'to
let' and his phone number on them..... it wouldn't have been too hard to
get hold of him to get my details, would it?

At least *some* investigation should have happened before going in heavy
    handed like that.

Yes... but... had it been your bike that someone else had stolen,
you'd rather they'd snatched first, asked questions later?

Not disagreeing with you and you're more than right to be livid, can
just see why maybe they acted as they did rather than hang about

It depends on exactly on what led them to believe it was pinched in
the first place more than anything, and I'd be pressing for them to
have a full investigation in due course.

    I'm absolutely speechless.

The inspector who called me called his colleagues 'incompetent'.

The landlord has to submit a claim for the damage to get the door
repaired - I've let them break the news to him!

Another inspector is calling me on Monday - the one who set up the raid.

It's him who I need to speak with to sort this out - although if he
doesn't sort things to my satisfaction, I have the name of his superior
and his number and been told to call him back if things don't work out.

At least you have someone to get restitution from.
Make a point of calling him Sherlock at every opportunity.

No, my garage was one of several lockups and houses raided. They did, by
using the scattergun approach, manage to arrest someone, though.
Not that they've admitted to - I'll be checking out 'Police, Camera,
Action' over the next few months, though.
I'm going to let the plod call the landlord and break the bad news
first, then I'll speak to him - hopefully he can sort moving my bikes
into one of his empty units and charge the extra rent back to the force
    involved.
