Ducati tank done

  1. And on its way back to me. Including the shipping, and having Pro-Twins
remove all the plumbing and the replace it (because I just dumped it
with them), it's going to set me back well over £500, but allegedly it's
    "a beautiful job".

I did chase one on eBay, and fired a question about internal corrosion,
and the seller replied with: "If I was keeping it, I'd seal it...".

    So I left well alone.

When I read this type of response to the cost of a particular job, I wonder
how much you expected it to cost? This type of work takes time and some
skill and even if you're not paying for skill, you still have to pay for the
    time it takes.

Maybe the guys should've charged a nominal 100 quid, ripped the bottom off
the tank, replaced all the fucked steel with new, sealed the rest of the
tank, welded in a new bottom, then prepped and painted the tank and managed
it all in a couple of hours.

How much is a fire alarm Nige? About 3/6d?

Indeed. I imagine it was a few days work for some very skilled
    people.

To put it in perspective, for that kind of money, you get half a day
of me reading the internet :)

  5. As Beav says, some serious metal cutting and forming, then welding, then
leak testing, then painting back to as new, new decals, and finally
deliver to and from Silverstone. Plus VAT.

Not cheap, but not unreasonable. And new tanks were £1000 when they were
available. Check out the price of a new R1 tank some time: it might
    shock you.

And what was the alternative? Scrap the bike?

Blimey - you must be better at than me. I'll read the
internet for 1.25 days for that.

I know that, but it's a lot of money for a fuel tank, kind of focused my
attention if you know what I mean.

Substitute "Tank" for "Hours of work". And you know how much paint can cost
    don't you?

  13. Excellent, a let's disclose our salaries thread. (Although I had assumed
Ben's rate was the rate his company pimps him out at)

  15. Oh yeah, sure, but like I said, go searching to see how much a new tank
    is for an R1.

In fact, I just have done. 1000-1400 euros, depending on 2002 model.

    http://tinyurl.com/3aj8csw

    1999 models are similarly priced.

On that basis, what would you do if you had a rotten R1 fuel tank and
    good used examples didn't exist?

It was. And not 100% accurate either, but close enough for the
    purposes of a semi-amusing comment.
