http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyscalculia How does one get checked professionally for a condition such as this? Do I see my GP, will they want to know, can they test for it or what? I've suspected I suffer from it for quite a while as my maths is abysmal, I often transpose numbers in a given sequence, am unusually shit with money and if I see a page of figures I may as well be looking at a plate of spaghetti. I match every single bullet point mentioned in the 'Presentation' section of the Wiki page, so my suspicions are sort of justified. Whenever I've been involved with retail work the till roll is always miles out from the contents, but the figures always match the value of items invoiced - money isn't going missing, basically I'm entering the wrong amounts into the till despite taking extra care not to. It's becoming a bit of an embarrassing situation really and I need to find out if I've got a genuine disorder or I'm just a bit thick when it comes to numbers. -- Lozzo Versys 650 Tourer, CBR600F-W racebike in the making, TS250C, RD400F (somewhere) BMW E46 318iSE (it's a car, not one of those 2-wheeled pieces of shite they churn out)
Doesnt add up. Fnarr. It seems sensible that there should be a numerical/mathematical corollary of dyslexia [1] But in fairness, many on that list could be explained as "easily distracted / not arsed / a rationalisation" Some of it reads as variance in aptitude should be considered " a condition" ? Bit too PC/touchy-feely/victimish for me [2] Eamonn [1] becoming contagious in full time education these days, it would appear [3] [2] the wiki version [3] what with extra time / exemption from spellins, grammar and that ole rascall, punctuation.
I've always been good with numbers and get frustrated with checkout kids that can't work out change from simple amounts without using a calculator[1]. But as you are around my I age (I believe) it does sound like something you are gunna have to cope with. From what I've seen of your writing here, I reckon you have managed to cope. We've all got stuff to deal with. I won the school prize for Maths and Physics at the private college I went to. But other areas I am useless at. We are different beings. I happens to be a cheezeburger. -- Kev [1] This doesn't sound like your situation. Just kids not having grown up in a world without calculators (or even slide rules). Makes them lazy.
Given it's not treatable there's little point in going to your GP. There are tests mentioned here - http://www.dyscalculia.me.uk/testing.html
I don't suffer with any form of dyslexia and like to think my grammar and punctuation, while they may not be perfect, are pretty good. Dyscalculia and dyslexia aren't connected in any way, except those who suffer with the former can be excellent writers. One of my daughters is mildly dyslexic, but is fantastic with numbers. -- Lozzo Versys 650 Tourer, CBR600F-W racebike in the making, TS250C, RD400F (somewhere) BMW E46 318iSE (it's a car, not one of those 2-wheeled pieces of shite they churn out)
There was a good article in the Saturday Telegraph 2 weeks ago which covered a family's problems in this area worth a read. Update your till to a scanner reader and bypass your problem.

Education psychologist. I've no idea what the tests are for adults but I can show you the stuff we're using for maths cognition in kids. We were talking about dyscalculia a month or so back and wondering if we could get funding to look at brain images from an MRI while the tests were given - has it got worse since your TIA? Waste of GPs time, it's not a medical condition per se and there's no treatment other than coming up with strategies for your individual circumstances.
A bit, in fact maybe a little more than a bit. I waas always confused by maths and numbers, but nowadays I just can't seem to suss them despite trying. Before the TIA I could manage if I sat down and really worked at it. Doing my books and VAT when I was self employed was a major stress time and caused me a lot of grief, but it got done and I never got fined or pulled up for getting it wrong. I wouldn't even dream of doing the same thing now, it just wouldn't work.
