Someone recently posted an article about E85 bioethanol on the NHCA forum. Apparently even Morrisons are going to have E85 pumps soon and Greenfuels claim they will soon be offering "small scale commercial production systems". How long before Champ has a Saab BioPower 9-5 I wonder? -- +-------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Gilera Nordwest Yamaha WR250Z | | Gilera GFR Moto Morini 2C/375 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+
Well, whatever it is what yours does, theoretically, could be 20% more power and 16% more torque on E85 (suitably modified). <begins search of ACU handook with special reference to detailed discussion of fuel and fuel additives regulations, knowing that speed hill climbing is the last bastion of pure methanol breathing engines>
Bad form etc. but the ACU know alll about it seemingly: http://www.acu.org.uk/news/story.aspx?guid=c996dd40-5f2f-4258-aa28-eb9029788c74 I wonder if a bit of 'lacing' is worth experimenting with?
ISTR reading - and seeing on Top Gear, so it must be true - that the Koenigsegg produces [even] more BHP off BioPower than unleaded. Swedish car, Swedish 'petrol'.
http://www.saabbiopower.co.uk/ Looks like they only do cooking versions, mind, not the V6 mobile salon.
Putting it very, very simply, to the limit of my understanding, ethanol has higher octane rating so advanced ignition timing (and loads more fuel metered as lower calorific value presumably). Fairly easy to achieve with fuel injection brain box ECUs. Also needs different valves and valve seats for long term use.
I can recommend decent cane cutting knifes for your home plantation, although it appears you can make it out of almost anything you could also make beer wine or moonshine out of, plus some unlikeley candidates such as coppiced willow.
That's the magic; you can ferment all sorts of things. Things that were previously just binned, burnt or left to rot. Not a new idea, of course, but if there's a new gen of ethanol burners coming on line, some of the tricks and componentry will be v. useful.
