I'm sure some smart-ass will be along soon to say it's common
    knowledge, but..

I've been having problems wiv me ears recently, so much so that I
haven't been able to ride the bike for over a week as the pain has been
far to much to bear. [1]

Anyway, allied to that I ended out yesterday with a sore throat and
swollen glands that are, apparently, tied into the rather large amount
of wax I've got in my lugs atm.

    Recommendation from the doc?

Olive Oil in yer lugs, two drops twice a day for a week.

[1] The pressure entering the lid and, obviously, the lugs, was too
much to bear, and it was too painful to put earplugs in to alleviate
    that problem.

Actually, smart-arse, it was a burd, and I checked it up too afterwards.

    http://www.foylesidefamilypractice.co.uk/help_content.php?content=4#61

And a build-up of ear-wax doesn't just 'go away'. Obviously, putting
Olive Oil along with the inserted chilli stuff wouldn't be a good idea.

Apparently, it is supposed to be better at clearing the wax than
remedies that we make ourselves (Earex, Otodex, et al).

Anyway, you're not the one sitting here with a pain in your ears (as
opposed to your arse), wondering when the **** you can get back on the
    bike.

  3. At the first sign of infection I just dribble a Boric Acid solution into
my lugs and it clears up.

Doc said it should clear the blockage in a week, but if not to go back
for the syringing. They don't like to do the syringing apparently, as
it can actually cause deafness, which is obviously not a good thing.

I've got a dropper thing from an Earex med I bought today (I suffered
really badly with my ears as a kid, in and out of hospital all the
time, and that was what I was given then), so I'll give that a scalding
tomorrow to use some Olive Oil.

I've also got a dropper from the Otodex for the dogs ears, but I don't
    fancy using that much...
It's been so bad, I was placing cotton wool in my ears to alleviate the
pain from the swinging fans in the office during the hot spell last
    week...not good.

And, I tried the Earex this evening - so much pain!!! Hopefully the
Olive Oil will be a bit easier (

Some years ago I had this.Ears were cleared of wax and still had
it.Needed anti-biotics to clear ear infection that caused the wax
    build up and pain.

Get a 2nd opinion as it's not cleared up naturally fast enough.

Note:Syringing of the ears does,"Not" cause deafness.

I've found,"Ortex"to be a good product once your ears are back to
normal. This is basically a mild and doctored form of urine(Urea) and
    peroxide.

It's only country/family upbringing/conventions that also make some
people squirm at the idea of using their own urine as an anti-biotic
or as a medication. It gives a whole new meaning to,"Taking the
Piss<grin>" but it's fact that it you own urine contains unique
anti-bodies that can be used as an anti-septic should you get a cut
and do not have some shop-bought anti-septic cream handy and is a mega
fast healer for chapped lips. This can even be a limb/life saver in the
event of an accident to prevent infection in an open wound.

It always strikes me as funny that many of us in the UK like cockles/
mussels and welks etc but would turn our noses up at eating
snails. They are the same thing :)

For idiot replies I'll say sigh now ;-)

I need my ears syringed about once a year. Even using olive oil.

  8. Good God. When I saw the header, I immediately remembered my Mum dosing
my lugs with (warm) olive oil when I was a nipper. And then I read this.

    It worked on me.

    It is :p
It does work, especially if you heat it up a tad in the microwave, but
I find Otex works much better.

They won't do syringing at my GP's anymore. A locum got a bit
    heavy-handed once & burst someone's eardrum.

That'll soften the wax nicely and make it more mobile.

Do you use earplugs? Constant use can cause ear infections.

    Also, consider one of these:

Yes, some wax will stick to the earplug & come out. The rest will get
compressed even further in your ear making the problem ten-times worse.

The risk there is of packing it even deeper - the same reason that
q-tips are not recommended. I never have significant wax issues, but
have recently (in the last couple of years) had the odd ear infection,
presumably from the swimming pool. So I do tend to use the q-tips to
ensure the ear is thoroughly dry all the way in, but obviously
proceeding with caution. Of course, there is often _some_ wax there.

AFAIK some wax is A Good Thing as it captures any dust 'n' shit, then
carries it out in the excess wax that usually works its way out
naturally. It's only when the excess gets packed in too tight to escape
    that it becomes a problem.

As others have sugested, Otex and/or warm olive oil to loosen and wax,
then stick a Hopi ear candle in. Get someone to help in case you set
    fire to your head.

<g> When I were a lad the only place you could buy olive oil was in a
chemist's - meant for for your ears, but some of the more progresssive
mums had learnt to cook with it as well.

Lack of earplugs doesn't cause wax in the ears.
