Probably 'glue ear' then. Which is what I suffered from when I was a
kid, and had to have grommets repeatedly put into my ears 'cos they
    kept falling out. Bloody painful.

Oddly enough, the pain now is 'different'. Perhaps it's cos I have
learnt to live with certain pain or not, I don't know. But just a
printer going off in work sets my ear going, riding the bike (with not
a too quiet engine) gets my ear going to.
I cannot abide having anything in my ears..hate it.
So do I - due to go to Scootland this w/e, looking out of the game atm.
   (

Just out of interest, in what manner could the middle or inner ear be
    blocked?

IIRC, the middle ear can get blocked via the Eustachian tube; for
example, when you have a cold. I think the inner ear can become blocked
    if you get an infection.

Anyway, do I look like a medical encyclopedia? JFGI.

I'd have a google first. There's loads of reasons why you SHOULDNT do this.

That wasn't actually a serious suggestion, was it?

I don't use that cheap stuff for cooking, believe me. So I certainly
won't be using it in my ears.

Anyway, when did you become an ENT consultant, or did you JFGI? The
ENT system is very complex, and all inter-related. You'll be telling
me next that we don't have holes in our skull relating to the sinuses
    and their pathways.
Shouldn't sit on the chair for too long, then. Or was it something
    else that caused it?
Ooh, doctor. Somehow, you may not be too surprised that I won't be
taking any notice of your recommendations. And I can only conclude
that you haven't suffered ear-ache so far, and think it's just a 'bit
of an ache'. Which it isn't believe me.

And, if you think I'm being vitriolic, you must've lead a bloody
    sheltered life, because that's tame.

    Hoyuss.

I remember the sheer relief as the eardrum finally burst and allowed
the gunk to escape from the middle ear.

That happened to me many times from childhood on, the last one being
about 15 years ago. I had a sinus operation that seems to have stopped
it, but my hearing's shite due partly to scared eardrums.

Thankfully, when I was a kid (many years ago, obviously), there wasn't
a waiting time, and I was seen to very regularly. Mind you, I also had
to go for hearing tests every 6 months, too. Ear ache isn't a good
thing, and I really do know what your son went through with it.

Oddly enough, I also used to suffer very badly with tonsilitis as a
child, but the two were never interconnected then. Although, with it
being an ENT prob, you'd think that they would've got a clue about it
quite a few years before 2k arrived!

As a total aside, wierdly I had a 'phone call from my sister this
evening, who is currently off work due to an ear infection (in the left
ear, same ear as I am struggling with atm), but her prob *is* an
infection, in the middle part of the ear.

    How odd is that?
