OK, I've never used it before, and don't currently have an account,
but am about to set one up because I've spotted something I want to
buy in an auction that runs out tommorow.

Any tips from the wise, presumably I need to do something with paypal
    as well?

only if they insist on paypal.

Just set up the account, email seller when you bid to explain that yes you
are new, have a zero rating etc, but are an all round nice chap despite
    all that.

Ebay insist on Paypal being offered as the preferred payment method for
all items. Part of making the transaction safer for the buyer,
    donchaknow.

Use a sniping tool to place your bid rather than ebay itself. Put in the
max amount you're willing to pay, use a single snipe, job done. Saves
the price going up in dribs and drabs and often the lowest cost way to
acquire something. Of course it can backfire if there are no bids and
the seller chickens out by withdrawing the item last minute.

There's 1 bid of 99p, I'm thinking i'll just fire in a tenner and see
if I get it. The fact the seller is local enough for me to collect
    helps, as they're allowing that.

That's how I wound up with two sets of throwover panniers (forgot I'd
bought the first set) and two left-hand indicator lenses for the Duke,
    when I actually wanted a right-hand one.

    Don't. Do. Ebay. When. Pissed.

You seem to have this present purchase sorted. Generally, though, when
buying, check the seller's feedback carefully before bidding, stay
away from laptops, mobile phones and other electronic stuff as that's
where the scumbags and scammers swim, and decide exactly how much you
want to spend and don't get sucked into a bidding frenzy (same as in a
    live auction).

When selling, make the pix as good and as large as you can (I
generally size mine to 12" across), and give a completely honest
description, omitting nothing. Some clowns think that because they
haven't mentioned a glaring fault, the buyer must still have the item.
    It doesn't work like that.

Finally, avoid uk.people.consumers.ebay unless you want to be stalked
by the two psychotics that inhabit it.

    In message
That's why I tend to use EZ-Sniper; you can do the last minute bidding
thing days in advance and should you change you mind you can cancel.

I think I've still got it. Brand new, it was/is. Cost me about £20.
I'd let it go for fifteen. It's not just a lens: it's the whole
indicator unit. I'll have a look in the garage, anyway.

What is the most embarassing thing Nige could have in his eBay bid history?

    Go on, YKIMS...

Easily bypassed unless you have a Buy It Now option.
When your item is first listed they set Paypal as the default, just
revise your listing and untick the box.

What? On certain items you *have* to accept paypal, i list cars & bikes &
have always had a BIN price, nowhere did it say to me you *had* to accept
    paypal at all....

I may be missing something, but, i'm sure i have used paypal & ebay more
than you, but i could be wrong.

Although, i feel I'm probably right.

its not always when pissed you do daft things on ebay.

having sold the turbo I was enjoying being able to move around the
garage. not for much longer. *sigh* Sunday I pick up a new bike.

if it wasn't for ebay I'd not bought another bike as I wouldn't have
    been tempted.

still, gives me something different to ride to Chimay on.
