Place bets now on the next generation (in this country) being PWR.

One of my cousins worked at Windscale/Selafield for most of his adult life
and after retiring last year, he's been asked to come back to de-commission
a reactor of some sort. I don't have a CLUE which type (or what the various
types actually are) but I'd like to know just "because".

He reckons it's going to cost an absolute fortune to do this work and I
wonder what happens to the radioactive "debris", coz I'm thinking there's
likely to be more than a few tons of the stuff?

    ICB-VERY-W though.

No doubt about it but the French are on it with the long term planning.

    That is quite true.
Unfortunately vested interests will see to it that our next generation
reactors don't fit the bill terribly well. Maybe the 3rd Gen will be right
    in terms of fueling/design/modularity

The waste disposal arguments come in two parts.
Smallish amounts of very high level waste - not really an issue at all.
    Glassification and deep repository disposal.

Huge amounts of low to medium level contaminated waste - not quite so feckin
    simple.
Too much volume to put in our (eventual) deep high level repository for cost
    reasons.

There is a possible solution. Europe and Russia have some *vast* underground
salt mines which will eventually be worked out.

It's expensive because it takes longer to de-commission a nuclear
power station than it takes to build a new one.

I'm not sure that my employers have enough money to persuade me to do
that sort of work and that's why pensioners are doing it.

People over the age of 60 are perfect for high dose radiation work!

I can't see him being "hands on" Andy, just making sure that those who are,
    are IYSWIM.

He's only 59 though. Bastards are out to kill him prematurely.

One of its few really good points.

TBF the roads are also good for cyclists, although you do occasionally
get some **** pissed off at having to slow down from 90mph 50yds
earlier than normal, as an assertive cyclist moves across into lane
    for the next roundabout.

The redway system is fine for leisure activities, but crap for anyone
wanting to get anywhere (on a bike). Too many dog-walkers, for a
start, plus there are a myriad of bridges and underpasses that add
both extra distance and significant climbs onto any journey.

By separating pedestrians from traffic, using raised roads, the
underpasses actually made it relatively easy to walk around MK without
having to cross too many roads. I recall the LA using it as a selling
    point a few years ago.
