I'd put money on it being a bit of an old wives tale from a mechanic,
however starting it up without checkign the needle stops in an error
    position could lead to problems.

Starting it without giving it time to do anything definitely leads to
    temporary problems.

Which part are you referring to?

The fact that if you try to start it too quickly the ECU gets confused
and the engine doesn't run? (happened with three different manufacturers
engines, don't believe me I'll gladly demonstrate on your 10R the next
    time we meet)

Or the fact the ECU then goes into diagnostic mode? (after the manager
of one of the UKs top 3 independant Porsche garage, Henry from
911Virgin, told me to keep cranking it, starting the boxster I heard it
first spin the engine, then start firing one cylinder, then another
(making two firing), then the third, etc, etc, perfectly even gaps
between each pot starting to work. Don't believe me, you get a 986 S
Boxster, bring it round here and I'll happily demonstrate)

Or do you believe that anything you've never experienced does not and
    cannot exist?
