Eden-Monaro

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by George W. Frost, Nov 24, 2007.

  1. Zipping quickly past the election channels, I could not help noticing the
pronunciation of a couple of places there.
I was up there last week tootling along the Monaro Highway and said to
    myself:
"Self, it is nice that they have named this highway after the almighty
    Holden Monaro car,"
but then have been informed that they pronounce it "Monairo"
Another place which comes to mind is Manuka, named after the tea tree of New
Zealand the manuka tea tree, isn't that unusual?,
but it is pronounced as "Manika" and not as I thought Manooka.
Can any older locals shed any light as to why they are priveledged enough to
pronounce theier place names differently to all others and get away with it?

    I did hear a rumour....
    ****, there goes another one....rumour...rumour
that it was because of when the queen came out and she called it Manika and
    the pronunciation stuck,

Lucky that New Zealand didn't become federated with OZ otherwise we would
    have a tribal upheaval

and did just that a looong time before the advent of the car....btw
a large area of land up there is known as "the Monaro" not just the hwy.....

and it`s a hanging offence to pronounce it differently...:^)

as an expat, i can tell you it`s Manooka, and thems in the ACT are
wrong wrong wrong....regardless of any input from `ole lizzy....

Yep - but for some reason, most Canberrans seem to pronounce the
highway the same way as the car, but the district or the electorate
    "Monairo".

Probably because they're proper nouns, and as such can be pronounced
however people want, plus a heap of other reasons. I'd have thought
you've been speaking English for long enough to work out that it's not
always a phonetic language. In Melbourne we have a suburb Reservoir
which is pronounced "Reser-vor" and right next door is Lalor, which is
pronounced "Lay-Law" even though it's named after Peter Lalor of Eureka
Stockade uprising fame, who's name is pronounced as "Law-ler". If you
can't get your head around them, don't even try to understand why the
surname Featherstonehaugh is correctly pronounced "Fan-shaw".

  5. Probably got sick of signing his name that way and decided to shorten it

I understand with Reservoir pronounced Reservor, yet the dams are called a
    Reservwah.
I also understand that Springvale is now pronounced Chingvale

I was on the NSW Big Ride a few years ago and we rode through and
camped in this area. One of the Mayors (I think it was a mayor)
welcomed us to the area and mentioned the pronunciation issue, and
    yep, it's 'Monairo'.
I have heard the same explanation from an ex-Canberran that the Queen
pronounced it that way, so that is the way it is pronounced.

That's like rating which type of shit smells better!
I blame Laws et al for the rise of the right-wing over the last 15 years.
Take away talk-radio and make blue-collar workers and pensioners listen to
music instead and half Australia's unrest would evaporate overnight!

So you are advocating forcing blue-collar workers and pensioners to listen
to your choice of radio to change their political viewpoint, Joseph Goebbels
    would be proud.

Clearly you are advocating ending one type of propaganda for your own
preferred method of entertainment (music) and by advocating the use of force
to facilitate this change the comparison with Germany's finest is quite apt.
In my view the people of Australia should be free to listen to whatever they
wish (even the ABC or ZZZ). Freedom of choice means that if you do not like
a particular programme you can turn it off.

Talk back radio has its place in Australia and whilst I rarely listen to
John Laws or the other self proclaimed Kings of the Radio I do not begrudge
them their rights to broadcast or ply their sponsor's wares. As for John
Laws being a Right Wing crusader I note that he was great mates with Peter
    Beattie and Paul Keating.

Ha ha; this is possibly the most bizarre and hysterically over-exaggerated
misrepresentation of a post that I've ever read John, but I'm feeling
magnanimous so I'll just leave you to realise what an ass you're making of
yourself yourself; without my rubbing your nose in it.
