The residents of Edinburgh have voted against the introduction of
congestion charging in the city by a margin of about three to one.

More than 74% of those who voted rejected the council's plan.

The turnout for the postal ballot was 61.8%. There were 133,678 votes
    against and 45,965 in favour.

Leader of Edinburgh City Council, Labour Councillor Donald Anderson,
said: "The idea is now dead and buried for Edinburgh but we are as
committed as ever to further improving our city's transport.

Good for Edinburgh. Amused to see in the article that "Experts from
Transport for London have given extensive advice on how to run a
congestion charge", which might have had quite a lot to do with the no
vote as TfL plainly couldn't run anything more complicated than a bath.

I don't recall the people of London having a say or being given the
    chance to vote on it.

Does this mean that a tourist will be able to buy a bus ticket without
    having to give exact change?

  7. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "Domènec"
Not a chance. All those unclaimed portions of change add up over the
year and are much better in the City's coffers than in your pocket.

  8. So you don't remember the London Mayoral Election then? Your memory is
    getting bloody dodgy these days.

I seem to recall Ken had the congestion charge as part of his manifesto
and then he won the election. Odd that.

Splendid result. Would you have agreed to the inner cordon only or did you
think that was a shite idea as well.

And passed the extra cost of on our customers.

It was a bad idea as all the revenue was going to be spent on policing
    it.
    <allegedly>

    Improvements to public transport?
    yeah right.

the feckers have introduced bus lanes in one of the South Gyle
    industrial estate.
Why is it that there's no bus visible in any of the lanes at 07:40
when I'm trying to get into work and the 1 lane left for cars is
clogged back for 100s of yards/metres/chains/poles/whatever your chice
    of measurement is.

AFAICR E'buggers don't have to have exact change, that appears to be
confined to the soap dodgers in the west.

  16. So? The whole issue of traffic congestion, public transport
improvements and reducing environmental impacts was a central part of
his manifesto. An awful lot of Londoners were absolutely delighted when
the congestion charge came in and was seen to work in the way
anticipated by those who designed it. If it is as massively unpopular
as you allege then how on earth did Ken get voted in again - on a policy
to expand the current zone - with an increased share of a larger vote
    IIRC?

As you keep reminding us you don't live in London and you don't pay the
charge so I struggle to see why this is such a big issue for you. I also
don't buy your argument that the congestion has moved to the edge of the
zone because it demonstrably has not - the Marylebone Road seems to flow
just the same as it also has (barring the Kings Cross CTRL scheme
roadworks) and that was one of the most critical roads in the whole
scheme. If it had become much more congested the Evening Standard would
have been screaming about it every night - strangely they've not said a
dicky bird on the subject. I wonder why that is?

  17. Well yes and no. Londoners voted for the CC but it was part of an
overall package of transport improvements that Londoners also wanted.
The big problem for Edinburgh is that the council has no real leverage
over the bus or rail services as they are all privatised or subject to
private sector discipline in the case of Lothian Regional Transport
Buses (which is owned by a group of local councils). Ken at least has
direct control of the roads, the buses and the Tubes in London so could
provide a more integrated policy solution.

I agree that the motorists will go back to whinge mode but then no
individual motorist will ever accept their own behaviours should change
    - it is something "other people" should do.

Yup they have certainly fucked that bit amongst many others bits up.Wait til
the RBOS opens to see a real **** up at the Gyle area!
They truly are a bunch of cunts and now made to look it. I just wonder what
the strategy will be now... surely Burns gets pumped for mis-reading it then
again maybe not. Nowt like creating a problem then charging the plebs to
    sort it .

  19. I won't pretend to know anything about how the political machine works,
but whenever I've seen Ken on the news, I don't feel the intense dislike
that I do when I see GWB f'rinstance.

The transport in E'bugger is a nonsense, Princes street is congested
with buses ANNND they display the same sign no matter which way they are
going so you can't tell which way to go.
