I want a Porsche GT3. 4WD. One of those Tesla electric motors on each
axle and a FOAD hydrogen fuel cell. Computerised power distribution
across the axles and to each wheel. And I want it now.

It's simple. Put a proposal together that'll work and send it to a car
manufacturer that has money to spare. ;)

I thought that a home built Lotus 7 type thing with an electric hub
motor on each wheel and a range extender generator in the boot would be
fun. Or even an electric 3 wheeler Morgan.

If it is practical I expect Porsche to do it well first. They will not
do a botch though. They refused to bring in the DSG slushbox on the 997
models in 2006 because it still wasn't "just right".

I'd like to test drive a GM Volt. The parallel hybrids are just a stop
gap, until the series hybrids are developed enough imho. I think that
series hybrids are better because the power generated on board is
generated more efficiently, because the generator can be optimized just
to run at a small range of loads. The Volt will use Li-Fe batteries,
which aren't so fragile and last longer than the older type lithium
    batteries.

Another reason for reluctance to go from parallel to series is the
existing manufacturing infrastructure maybe? Or is it just pure
development and maturity of the technology?

That's the problem with todays, and yesterdays fuel cell cars, power.

Hydrogen fuel cell cars are a lot like the GM Volt, as the fuel cell
usually can't provide enough power to drive the car directly.. but
rather keeps the drive batteries charged up.

I'd still feel better about having a non pressurised liquid fuel tank in
a car than a high pressure hydrogen system, and all the associated
maintainability issues associated with that. Can you imagine the local
grease monkey garage every being able to service one.. heh.

I've owned a car with a 110L LPG tank, no different. And of course the
power is going to be fed through a capacitor/battery/chemical storage
    buffer.

It's a lot different, the pressure is higher for hydrogen for starters.
Part of the reason why you don't find hydrogen powered BBQs. Folk would
    be blowing themselves up.

I'd've got away with it too, if it hadn't have been for those pesky
    kids!

Why is that significant? Many FWD cars had inline engines.

Yes, but that's not significant either. In terms of packaging, the engine
    orientation isn't a huge factor.

You seem to have missed my point, that if you're going to refer to FR cars
as "Systéme Panhard", then you might as well continue the Citroën theme by
referring to FF cars as "Traction Avant".
    Crumple zone.
That the Mini was FWD? No, it doesn't.

It's somewhere to put the radiator too. :)

Subtle detail, though... Panhard hadn't built any RWD cars for decades by
the time Citroen took 'em over.
