I can think of a couple of possible reasons. Front crumple zone, for
one. Admittedly an engine block would fill a lot of that, but I
suppose it also provides a nice heavy mass to barge its way through
    whatever you've run into.

Somewhere to put the fromt wheel arches for another: they need to be
moderately wide to accomodate the steering lock. That or the driver
has to sit skewed or all alone out front.

Another guess is concern about conservative buyers.

I have heard of it before but it didn't ring any bells until it was
described, at which point I had an "oh *that*" moment.

For a high performance vehicle motors in wheels is too much unsprung
    weight

Why do people think that having a pressure vessel in the boot is a
problem? it really isn't. Easy to make one you could crash a train into.
And it should have a fusible release valve so that in the event of fire
the hydrogen will burn out in a controlled manner.
Better than a plastic tank full of petrol as in most cars now.

    No and I don't care, it's still a compromise.

They tried a motor in wheel setup for that 640 hp? parallel hybrid BMW
Mini. Apparently, the unsprung weight of the electric setup was a tiny
bit heavier. I'd have thought if they used motors smaller than 160 hp
per wheel.. that would have come down to equal or under the petrol setup.

I'd prefer a plastic tank full of diesel to petrol any day. There's
something about having a volatile pressurised tank in a car that's not
right. I cite the example of that CNG bus going pop in India. That was
due to sub standard pressure vessels being used. Where as a sub standard
liquid diesel tank would have just leaked.

Well, I was answering specifically "why a bonnet"; I'd ignored the bit
about motors in wheels, but yes, you're right.
