Ok my brother has a Suzuki GS 500 bike, he's went and purchased a device
called Gear Indicator by Biketronix. The manual says it should take about 30
mins to set up. He's been at it for just over a day now. The manual and
website say that you have to use certain coloured wires for certain
connections (obviously) the problem is that the device supplied has 4 wires
of colour Black, Red, Green and Yellow but the manual keeps mentioning
orange and blue wires from the device but as I've said it doesn't have an
orange or blue wire. The main problem he seems to be having is finding the
pulse input from the tachograph/speedometer. Can any knowledgeable soul tell
me on which loom he'd find the pulse from the tacho/speedo? also will he
require a multimeter? I've provided a link to the website so you can have an
idea of what I'm on about. http://www.biketronix.info/english/

    TIA

My 1981 GS450E had a factory-fitted gear indicator between the clocks
that was utterly reliable[1] unlike the abortion that this poor fellow
    thinks he needs.

If you feel you want more revs, change down, less revs, change up.
Knowing what gear you're in is irrelevant, except when you come to
a stop, and that's easily sorted by simply changing down until you
    can't change any more...

[1] But every bit as unnecessary

M8 I tried telling him he didn't need a bleeding gear indicator but he's
went and got the bloody thing now, so it looks like he's stuck with it.

  9. My HBoL only goes up to '02 but makes no mention of electronic clocks.
I suppose it is possible that they threw away a perfectly good proven
mechanical design and installed expensive electronics but it would
rather fly in the face of the cheap and cheerful philosophy that
    characterises the range.

Quite, hence the '!='. Even I know that, and I'm thick.

  12. My point being that he is going to have to hunt hard for electrical
    pulses from mechanical devices.

A clue as to year and/or model would help as well, they do change things
like the colour of wires over time you know.
I have anther that should be made but I will leave that up to the
    pedants.

  13. My point is that you have satisfactorily demonstrated that total
fuckwittedness is, indeed, a family trait. Well done.

  14. Yes, but it requires an electronic *rev counter*, you thick, thick ****.

It's a 1999 model, anyway we have found a pulse now, problem is that we can
program the indicator but after we switch the bike off then back on again
the info seems to be lost, is it possibly a bad earth we are getting?

  16. So that will be a GS500EX in either Green, Orange or a rather gay Yellow
    then?

The Green/White wire that goes from the pulse generator behind the RHS
    crankcase cover to the IGU.

Possibly but unlikely if you have earthed it to the frame. More likely
is the thing turning off and resetting through lackovplusvolts but I
don't really have enough of a clue to do anything other than make an
    educated guess.
