I don't think the urge to take the piss out of Germans will cease any
sooner than the urge to take the piss out of the French. Do you really
think wars have anything to do with it? It's more a case of us being
so similar that we just naturally have a dig at each other.

My maternal grandparents hated the Germans but that was simply because
my grandfather went through WWI from 1914 to 1918 in the cavalry and
then lost his middle son a few weeks before the end of WWII. I
wouldn't have looked on them as my best friends if I'd been in his
    place.

If you want to examine a case of long lasting dislike for another
country go to a town where a lot of local men died in Japanese pow
camps. Bedford used to be a prime example and I've no doubt a lot of
people of similar ages to my parents still harbour seriously bad
    feelings towards them.

See my previous post. It might have died out a bit now but when I was
a teenager there was a lot of ill feeling towards the Japanese in
    Bedford.

Do you mean we weren't great then or we're still great now?

....the constant stream of it is about as original and funny as Bobby
    Davro.

Wouldn't you be embarrassed if you discovered that someone you thought
was relatively intelligent found Bobby Davro funny?

    Somethings just cannot be ignored.

Yes - it's part of the cultural heritage. Why do you think the
iconography of the Spitfire [1] is such a political lever - for all
parties. It's not the old fuckers they're chasing with that imagery.

Bollocks - it's part of the cultural heritage. Which is all well and
good but a bit tired and lazy when it also doubles up as humour.

I rather meant "still thinks we are significant on the world stage". Which
    would be 65 and over.

    Oh the latter of course.

OK so a few MP's clearly do, or they think Trident might make us so.

Ah the other part of WWII. I've often spoken to old folk and rellies who
thought the same as you describe but didn't appear to hold the same over the
    Bosch. Which is odd.

Now you have mentioned it I can remember some attitudes when the Japs
started importing small cars into the UK, and your retired flat cap types
    started buying them.

Which only goes to prove the brain eye and hands are only loosely connected
    when multi tasking. Quelle Surprise.

The Trident replacement will truly rock. Don't **** with a nation that
can put you back in the stone age without surfacing.

  20. Yeah, but you cannae really nuke terrorists, can you? I suppose Iran
or N. Korea might be asking for it some time.
