I shall have a think. I don't feel any of the current stable of bikes
is really the right tool for the job... the ZRX comes close, but if it
goes down I suspect it's not getting up again.

I have some MZs - sturdy enough to be kicked straight /when/ they're
crashed in the snow; reliable enough; ugly enough and slow enough (faster
than warp factor platy though but won't be too bogged down by constant
    slow speed).

    We'll help you lift it.

Current view, given other bikes likely to be employed:

    - K75
Plus: Have it, know it well, once the shaft's replaced it's reliable.
Minus: Heavy. Luggage fragile if it takes a tumble, too tall for
comfortable 'off roading' and possibly hard to control on a soggy or
    snow covered surface.

    - Sweller MZ
    Plus: Reliable..., Light
Minus: Small engine. Luggage capacity. Need to be polite to Sweller.

    - R1100GS
Plus: Reliable (er...), Luggage, Not so tall, can be made robust.
Minus: Heavy, High, need to buy one.

    - F650GS
Plus: Reliable..., Luggage, not so tall
    Minus: Need to buy one.

I have the festering remnants of a TS50 round the side of my shed, you
can use that if you like (you'll need to reassemble it first, mind).

Er... thanks but I'd hate to use such a valuable part of our
motorcycling heritage for something like the above.

Bugger, I guess it'll have to moulder some more then.

I really should just get it going and sell it, but the boy insists he
will do it himself "at some stage".

I may repair darsy's R65 and press that into service.

    Pros:
Light, luggage capacity, 4 stroke, not mine.
    Cons:
    I need to fix it.

  10. I think my options would be the CD250 (light enough, reliable enough,
quick enough) and the SL125 (better in the snow, but a tad slow).

Score extra points for taking the Ducati?

You're mad. A few boys from work do that every year and not a year has
gone by without someone throwing it down the road due to snow and ice.

Take a Mercedes, much more sensible.

She won't go when she realises exactly how cold it's going to be and I
somehow suspect she'd have to fight a couple of others for that
    coveted spot in the pram.

I might feel the need to drag the mighty Yamaha out of the garage and
get it in winter tune if everyone else is taking baby bikes. I'm sure
a couple of suitable bikes will be offered up by owners looking for
    any excuse not to go.
Not as many as I'd get for taking the 10R.

    technically, it's blaney's R65, but go-on, go-on, go-on.

I'd do this fucking stupid thing if I weren't afraid of dying in the
    cold.

Blaney should sort his act out and fly home for the trip.
The riding there won't be bad because we're not going to be hammering
it and all you need to do is wrap up and keep dry.

It's the nights that will be the tricky bit but two sleeping bags is
the way I'm approaching it. I've got a decent tent, a decent stove and
as long as I can avoid the temptation to get on the schnapps it'll be
    a doodle.

You know you should go after missing the Frankfurt trip.
