Elefantentreffen 2011

There seemed to be some interest this weekend (no, I didn't go picking
on drunks) in next years Elefantentreffen so can anyone who seriously
wants to go put their hand up and I'll either get Adie to clear the old
mailing list and start it again or just start a new one and then we'll
subscribe all interested parties and that'll probably be the end of it
    on here.

I'll repeat the normal story that this isn't an 'organised' trip, the
regular attendees will let anyone who's not been before know what the
score is and we'll keep everyone informed as to dates, ferries and
hotels but you book it for yourself and if you cock it up you don't go.
It's a self-help trip and if things go wrong you'll need to have some
means of recovery sorted out because once it's obvious any problem isn't
a 30 minute fix you're on your own.

We'll be leaving the UK on a Tuesday evening, stopping at a hotel in
Germany on the Wednesday then three nights camping at the rally. Sunday
night is back to the hotel then Monday night on a ferry home. Most of us
go from Harwich to the Hoek because it's a night on the beer and it's a
shorter ride once you're on the mainland but others will probably cross
over to Calais then nail it up from there.

It'll be cold and you'll get hardly any sleep because the drinking never
stops for some but it's a laugh and it's certainly the biggest winter
rally in Europe. Food and drink are reasonably priced at the site and
you can buy firewood from by the main gate so chainsaws or axes are only
for show. It'll almost certainly snow so don't think you can go on a
litre class sports bike and there's over 1,000 miles of motorway riding
so 2-stroke trailies aren't going to last the trip. I suspect that XT
Yamahas will be the bike of choice for most but there may be an
Armstrong up for sale soon if that floats your boat.

    Don't all wave at once.....

The first time we went we had 3 K series Beemers, a Pan European, a
ZXR400 Kawasaki, a VFR750, a Guzzi something or other and a Smart Car so
anything will do as long as you accept that if it snows as much as it
did in 2010 you'll struggle if you don't have some kind of device to aid
    traction.

I've started this quite early this year to give others time to sort out
bikes etc but having done it on an outfit I'd strongly suggest you don't
go down that route unless you build/buy one that will cruise at 70+ mph
for extended periods because we won't be waiting for a 50mph Ural.

I let the drunks make their own minds up then did nothing to discourage
them. That's not the same as picking them out and goading them into
    going.

  9. I'm glad someone picked him up on that phrase. I read it and thought, in
my best Victor Meldrew mode, "I don't believe it".

Take the Armstrong - it'll piss it. I'll probably be keeping mine - and
if I do go (work pending) I'll fit the studded tyres that I took off when
    I got back home.

To be honest after our experiences in Norway the Elefant is a piss easy
    weekend away. Which it is.

Anyone who thinks the Dragon is comparable is wrong - although in the
last three years it hasn't rained thereby making it a lot nicer.
Although last year was the only year with deep snow for the whole weekend.

It's a fun piss up but not really a test.

I'm with Alex and really want to ride a bike to the Arctic circle - just
need a bike that isn't characterful for the sake of it and has an
electric start. However, that's a different story...

It would look cool and it will be fixed by then.
I'm over the shock of the Norway expense so I don't feel the urgent need
    to sell it anymore :)
It's how we live every day here in February ;)

It's cold and I always come home knackered but that's because I spend
the weekend sat by a fire drinking beer. Apart from that it's just a
case of getting there without breaking down.
I'll be going back to Norway after I've done the Elefant again.

You expect me to put luggage on the back of that thing?

It'd be in two pieces before Clackett Lane services.

I'll be looking at getting one of these:

(not that one, but one like it - when I've sorted out some cash...)
