How much storage space can you find? I'm not convinced that I could
fit that in our conservatory, let alone stand the grief it would cost
me, but if someone has room for me to hide it I might be tempted.

The only problem is that I'd be trying to fit the chair on the K and
then Nige the bike out asap. Failing that I could always dispose of
    both next spring.

Should a few of us consider hiring a container somewhere to store all
these rubbish bikes we buy on impulse?

Well, given my cars don't sit in a garage and I'm an untidy fucker I'm
pretty much up to my storage space. If I could take some time off work
and tidy my garages I suspect I could fit at least another outfit in...

However that's not going to happen in the next few months.

But why. The MZ has legshields and goes fast enough for deep snow.
IIRC they have crap or 6V leccies though. I've seen some with 2CV
alternators on a belt drive though.

Because bikes like that are purchased for use once or twice a year and
I've no room to store crap like that at home.

You seem to be showing almost enough interest in the trip to put your
name down or are you like one of the rubberneckers that slow down on
the motorway to see the crash on the other carriageway?

It's what you want to make it.
Is there a value to be set on having a laugh with a bunch of friends?
As far as I'm concerned it's about going somewhere different, meeting
a lot of people of different nationalities and having a laugh.
Not for me. It's a rally I've always wanted to do, I'm going with
people I get on with and with luck we'll all have an absolute riot.

It could be anywhere in the World as far as I'm concerned, all I want
to do is have a long weekend riding my bike, drinking beer, having a
giggle with like minded people and then coming home.

I'm not even being paid for it ffs.

Well, referring back to the Frankfurt run, there's obviously a lot of
mileage in the "gentlemen in England now abed" thing. However, while
there's a degree of amusement to be had from the likes of WUN, VAM, darsy et
al holding their manhood cheap, the real fun was actually doing it. There
was the frisson of setting off on the Friday morning while there was still
snow on the ground in Thornbury. There was the lunacy of cranking it across
Romney Marsh in the dark and the rain on an old heap with square tyres, and
a degree of relief that Saturday was dry and sunny. Saturday was a blast,
hammering across the backroads of France in the sunshine. Sunday (well,
Sunday afternoon) was spent in the Hunsruck, long hills, crests, forests,
close racing with barely a bus-ticket's space between us, roaring through
the deepening shadows of evening. Hermeskeil at sunset, Luxembourg as the
last light was dying in the sky. Beer, chinky, beer. The long run home
across France: all day on the road, conquering distance and adversity.

Okay, it wasn't all upside: Trier-Frankfurt was about 180 miles of autobahn
after dark, tedious and a bit scary at times, the drag back home from the
Chunnel was another grind, and it could have been pretty grim if it had
rained all weekend. But it didn't.

It could be grim, or it could be hilarious. Or both. If we don't do it,
we'll never know, and even if it's grim, we'll have done it.

I think you've summed it up better than I ever could.

Give it a couple of years and someone will come up with another daft
idea that might or might not appeal. That's the beauty of ukrm,
someone always comes up with something that sounds like fun to a few
others and they just go and do it.

Oh, come on. It's just a long weekend, and if it gets too much, you can
wimp out to an 'otel or an 'airport. Sort yourself out with a
vertebra-friendly shitheap and a cheap tent.
