'Enduro' rear tyre recommendations

A quick blat round the local trails up on the WR250 today was great
fun, but a session on the on-site track confirmed that the rear tyre
needs replacing. As the hard frost has finally departed it was very,
very greasy. The lad was sailing round relatively easily on the KX65
    but I was really struggling.

So recommendations for a 'road legal' rear knobbly. Front is a
virtually new Metzeler which seems OK (and appears to be legal) but the
rear is a Dunlop marked not for highway use and well worn.

A Metzeler to match ? Needs to be as knobbly as possible but still be
'legal' in case I bring the Yam back to the UK for a while some day
(although would it be a case of CBA for plod as it is French
registered?) They probably don't care here where there is no MoT for
bikes and a speedo seems to be an optional extra on an 'off-road' bike.

I use Michelins and Metzelers on the DR-Zs but I can't tell you which
without looking and wont do that til tomorrow....

All I can say beforehand is - have you tried just getting all the leading
edges nice and square? You can get a few hundred extra kms out of a tyre
that looks worn if you can be arsed to get the leading edge of the blocks at
    right angles again....

Amongst the mad fuckers that take their R-GSes off road, the Continental

    MT-21. Superb offroad, acceptable onroad.

  5. Having just checked I see that my DR-ZSs are fited with Michelin M12s which
    are not for highway use.....

The E is fitted with Metzelers marked just "6 Day Extreme" plus the usual
size info etc but I can't find anything called that on the website, but the
closest (and the only one with the right size front) is the "Unicross"...
They don't have "Not For Highway Use" on the side though.

As I suspected then, not such an issue in France?

Thanks for that. I could probably sharpen up the blocks a bit. but
their lack of depth is such that the tyre gets caked up and full of
clag thus resembling a slick pretty quickly.

I have decided to bring the rear wheel home and source a tyre in the UK
anyway so I will be checking those that people have mentioned.

Or a Michelin T63. Nearly as good in most terrain and a little bit
better on road. The downside is that the T63 front tyre does not
convert steering input into bike direction in soft terrain, the MT-21
    at least tries.
With luck (and if this is really what you're after, and the sizes fit)
you can still find a MT-18 "Reinforced" (or something like that). It
is road legal and a true off road tyre, very interesting on road.

Forget MT21s & especially the 'big trailie' stuff like TKCs & Karoos -
they're utter shite compared to a proper knobbly (no offence to wessie
    & JB).

If you just want something that's 'road legal' rather than 'good on the
road', you can't beat the Mich AC10[1]. Trelleborg[2] also do some
amazingly knobbly road legal stuff if you want to spend a bit less, but
I can't remember which models are legal & which aren't.

Thanks. That's what I am after. Knobbly as possible and still legal (in
the UK, nobody seems to give a toss in France).

The legality seems rather a grey area, but one site I found talked of
anything with an 'E' marking and also marked 'MST' as being legal.
Apparently FIM enduro legal does not automatically mean 'road legal'.

I may well contact Racespec if my usual tyre supplier can't assist
(although they will generally get and fit anything). Racespec did the
suspension lowering on the hill climb Husky for me back in 92. I wonder
if the same guy is running it as he used to operate from home back
    then.

Correct on both counts. Also road legal doesn't mean FIM legal.

As my ever helpful chap at Magnum told me. A Michelin AC10 already in
stock and being fitted today. The downside being that a long chat about
off-road bikes and associated matters led him to the opinion that my
WR250 is in fact a mere road legalised (and french registered) YZ. Oh
well, still surprisingly tractable and easy to ride for a stroker even
if it hasn't got the genuine heavy flywheel motor.
