the horizontally opposed is called a "boxer" config as well. and you left out a boxer 6 cyl (i think that things like the Rune use
    that or summit)

Here is my working list of engine configs to write about in the
Motorcyclopedia. I haven't written any of these yet, I'm working on the
    animations.

    Have I left any out?
    ******************************
4 Stroke Engine Configurations, with 2 stroke where applicable:

    - Single ( + 2 stroke)
    - Twin, V (all angles, + 2 stroke)
    - Twin, opposed, horizontal
    - Twin, parallel (180°, 360° firing sequence, + 2 stroke)
    - Triple, in-line (all firing sequences, + 2 stroke)
    - Triple, V(+ 2 stroke)
    - Four, opposed
    - Four, inline (all firing sequences)
    - Four, inline horizontal
    - Four, V (all angles)
    - Four, square (+ 2 stroke)
    - Five, V
    - Five, inline... does this exist? I've never heard of one, but that
    doesn't mean squat.
    - Six, V
    - Six, inline

Where I have an example of a 2 stroke version I've included it, but I'm not
    certain my list is complete.

This is the only one you need concern yourself with Manning.

All the others were briefly tried but none have proven as effective.

Yeah, I left nicknames out of the list deliberately as a number of configs
have a nickname of some sort (kettle, etc). Thanks for pointing out the HO
six and the examples, I had forgotten that one.

Actually this weekend did teach me the benefits of boxer-twin engines.

I witnessed three BMWs go down (two on ride to PI and one slow drop in car park
    during yesterdays Canteen Ride).

On all three occasions I noted the engine saved the owner from what would have
    been expensive fairing damage.

    :)

There was a rather tasty V4 500cc two stroke manufactured once upon a

PS By inline do you mean transverse, or inline like the new Rocket 3?

    The Megola!

5 cylinder radial, built into the front wheel.

I'm told there is a loony racing one on the classic racing circuit in
    Europe.

I've never heard of one - can you give an example?

Can you name an example? I haven't found any references in any of my books.
    (I'll keep looking though)
By inline I just mean that there is an imaginary line connecting all of the
pistons when they are at TDC. This arrangement can then be mounted in a
variety of directions, and I've got a list of examples of each.

Yep Suzuki Gamma I think they're called.

You'll commonly see Eric Saunders riding one like a weapon and marking ever
corner on MRA organised social rides.

Interesting bike. I took a brand new fresh out of the crate one for a ride back
when I was still on my L's.

I couldnt understand why the tacho only started at 3,000rpm. Hmm.

After they finally got the bastard started I toodled around on it for a while
wondering if only one of the cylinders was working.

So I gave it a handful of throttle.

    <gulp>

That has got to be the weirdest design I have ever seen - I can't even
figure out precisely how it works. Wouldn't it pull to the right somewhat?

    Thanks for the link :)

    V8 Boss Hog and Drysdale.
W3 (can't find the reference, but its an American[what else] 2.5 litre thing
with a triple arranged like a VS. twin, but with three of them.

There is that 48 cylinder monster featured here recently, but I suspect it
    was not 'production'

Some bloke in pommeled has been butchering Kawaka 750 two-stroke triples and
    making in-line fives and sevens(!)

I recall a report of one being ridden, the aforementioned racer I think.

The guy said it handled better than you'd expect :) I think it was the
general weirdness and the low volume that killed it off. I seem to
recall it won a few races in its day.

Thre's better pics which show it in all its utterly weird glory.

http://www.geocities.com/csepelmotos/megola.htm which is, I think, the
    classic racer.
