I've got an hour and a half to wait for recovery, and all I've got to
pass the time is my mobile phone. Somebody post something interesting
    for me to read, please.

    Damned Italian electrics.

Mind, it could be worse: at least there's no pool of oil underneath
it, so it looks like the liquid gasket worked.

Look a few yards back down the road - is that the tail-end of a tapering
slick, down there? Does it lead to a bigger line? Have you checked the
    oil level?

  3. It was all nice and dry underneath, last time I looked. I'd check the
oil level, but I've only just got comfy and I can't be arsed to move.

It would still be dripping shirley?

Was it the alternator cover that got put back on with goo ? No
connection with the electrical problem I'm sure ;-)

  5. I think he's trying to be funny. Very trying.
That had me worried for a moment. But it's been running fine up till
last night, headlights and everything, except I don't think the
    battery's been getting charged.

It could just be that the battery's duff: after being charged
overnight, it wouldn't turn over the bike today, so I had to bump
start it. The charge warning light came on after about 5 miles or so,
then it started misfiring, then eventually died completely.

My Ducati did that, the reg/rect wire broke so not charging the battery.

  7. I gave that wire a bit of a wiggle before putting the tank back on
last week, thinking that I should really sort out the dodgy-looking
connections on it at some point. Wish I'd done it while I thought of
    it.

Sounds a likely culprit. My Guzzi used to suffer from intermittent lack
of charging with a flickering warning light, until I traced it to a bad
connection under the tank somewhere, nowhere near the reg/rect.

The Voxan, however, whilst it charges perfectly, eats batteries. They
get too hot because of the location down low by the rear pot pipe and
the oil tank. I put a new Varta AGM one on before the Manx. Must
remember to Optimate it from time to time over the winter. I recovered
the Westco on the MX5 OK. It did take 5 days on the Optimate, but this
is normal for this type of battery apparently. Must find a local
Clifford alarm agent and have the pesky thing ripped out.

The recovery man just removed the shitty connector & crimped them through,
gave the bettery a quick chaqrge, started the bike & I was off to meet Beav,
    Chris & Monz :)

The charger end, or a permanent harness on to a bike end ? I bodged up a
connector for mine using a speaker plug and socket from Maplins. One
round and one flat pin, so you can't get the polarity wrong (if you wire
    it correctly).

    Google/Ebay up 'Tamiya connectors'

    They're a standard battery hookup.

    Cheers,

    Paul.

You could probably sell that idea to TOG.

ICBW Nige, but the ends look remarkably like Tamiya connectors, available at
all good mogel shops for mere pennies.

  18. (I thought I'd posted this yesterday, but using Google Groups on my
mobile is a bit of a hit-and-miss affair...)

The man in the orange van eventually turned up, agreed with my
diagnosis of a very knackered battery, and confirmed it with various
tests which all said the same thing: *that* is an ex-battery.

He trundled off to Halfords to get me a new battery (*how* much?),
refitted it, and all was well. But by that time it was gone 4 o'clock,
and as I hadn't even made it to the M1, I decided to give up on my
plan of visiting Bletchley Park. Some other time, I guess.

Oh, and still no oil leak. <fx: flicks Vs at Beav, Lozzo, and all the
    other gasket fetishists>

  19. Oops. I wonder if the dud battery took out the reg/rec. Not unknown.
