I thought that, excepting medical conditions, sons were *always*
    taller than their mothers?

That would be the medical condition known as shorterthanmumitis?

Surely it is just that the bell curves don't overlap much.

    That's what I'm asking.

I've been told that sons are *always* taller than their mothers; I'm
interested if this is genetic fact, or just the normal distribution,
    as you suggest.

The latter. I can think of several blokes I know who are shorter than
their mothers. I cannot, however, understand why the former would be
given any credence whatsoever. The 'tallness' gene (if such a thing
could be said to exist) would work line any other, bothin temrs of its
random inheritence and its application. Even once a set of genes is
inherited, such things as tallness are not fixed at birth. Some sets
of identical twins are not the same height, for example.

  11. Also remember that the average height for men and women is
significantly different (men is 5'8" ish and women 5'4" ish - from
    memory).

So that would pre-dispose sons to be taller than their mothers anyway.

Average heights for both men and women have risen steadily over the
past 100 years too as a result of better healthcare and nutrition[1] so
it wouldn't be surprising if (as a combination of both factors) sons
were always taller than thei mothers[2]

If anyone spots some of this

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Becherovka

on their travels, going reasonable in a duty free somewhere. Snag me a
    bottle.

It is available in one UK import place, but costs more than a decent
    Malt !

Alternatively, i'll just wait until I go back to Oslo Duty Free, which
is the last place I saw it !

    Cheers

As it happens, we have such a bottle in the Kitchen. Friend brought it
back from Czech rep. What are you supposed to do with it anyway? I
mean, drink it, obviously, but with ice, water, mixers, or what?
Really? I suspect it's quite cheap in CZ.

I drink all my spirits straight, or over a lump of ice if i'm feeling
    really adventurous.
Sure, I think a litre came out about £17 duty free some years ago, but
    it's a scorching £27 plus P+P from

It's good, but not that good !
