ER-5 Question

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by david.alderton, Apr 14, 2008.

  1. So, the MOT time comes around again, and I go over the ER5, checking
things as best I can and move on to the lights. All lights work, front
headlamp might need some height adjustment, indicators blink in a
satisying manner. Pull on the front brake lever and the brake light
works, press the rear brake and nothing.

How does the brake light turn on, when the rear brake is applied? I've
had the footrest hangar/brake lever assemby off, I can't see any wires
at all in the vicinity, and it still won't come on when the lever is
pressed. There's no obvious sign that anything is missing. Does it
    even exist?

    TIA.

only pre 1986 bikes can get away with just one brake light actuator,
so your bike /should/ have a switch on the pedal.

Sometimes they're actuated by a spring, running backwards from the
pedal and operating a switch mounted on the frame. It could be that
the spring is missing, hence you wouldn't look at where the switch is.

  4. Thanks very much.

Further searching has turned up that the thing that was 3 or 4 inches
away from the lever, is, in fact, the switch, without a spring.

    Much obliged.

who would have thought that the likes of you and me could have solved
a technical bike-related problem on our own, eh?

In the cable presumably. For future reference you might find this link
handy (though choose the right year and allow for US peculiarities).

I'm not completely surprised that I solved it on my own, but I would
    have been if you had.

Well done. Re-reading David's follow up I assume there is a switch with
a missing spring. Not a cable switch with no spring in the first place
(as on SO Morini rearset installations). Still can't find it on the
on-line parts fiche though. The logic of the categorisation of what item
is part of which assembly would be worthy of a chapter by Pirsig.

  9. Switch is present, but the spring isn't, or I've attached it to
something else. The HBOL was particularly unhelpful over the weekend.
However, that website was useful, and I was shown a service manual
with decent enough pictures to go from there.

Am looking forward to seeing what else I can break on it this evening
in the course of 'maintainance and preparation'...
