I had to look up what Ergot was.

I think the answer is no.

But that's probably because I don't think I've ever actually eaten an ear of
    corn.

We think we had mild ergot poisoning. Quite exciting it was,
hallucinations, morbid fears, sleepiness, tingling, etc. We both had
wierd dreams - mine was of a ride in DEATH's train (it doesn't stop at
Euston, I discovered BTW) and Owen dreamed of a strange fruit that
looked a bit like a big raspberry but was derived from a fish. The odd
thing is that an ergot-deformed ear of corn (mainly rye) looks big and
red and smells strongly of fish. Neither of us knew that until I
googled, having thought of ergot when we recovered. Strange. Anyone
    else had it?

LSD is more reliable, so I'm told. Anyway, google for ergotism for the
the interesting history of it all.

Why were you eating ears of corn Marina?

Incidentally, SWMBO recently moved the pony into another field to let the
grass recover, and the most fantastic looking mushrooms have sprung up all
    over the outgoing field.

At least, they look and smell like mushrooms, but we aren't too confident
    about trying them.

LSD is dervied from ergot, so there are no doubt similarities, but
hopefully without the nasty side effects. I did google - very
    interesting.

Indeed. And it made the plague worse as it messed up the immunue
    system.
We both had impaired peripheral circulation, but no dancing, sadly.
No, we ate bread. Lots of it, as it needed to be used up and it was
delicious - fancy stuff, y'know. Once the ergot gets milled in, it's
    undetectable.

While browsing last night, I noticed there was an outbreak of ergotism
in 1951 in the town Pont St. Esprit, France. Coincidence? I think we
    should be told.

They have white (ish) tops and dark mushroom coloured gills.
Hmm, I don't have the bottle though.
    Heh, sounds like a plan.....
These look like perfect mushrooms and there are loads of them
They're not ink caps I am pretty sure
    Oh go on....
Wise words mate, but I shan't be trying 'em.

Anyone fancy a "UKRM does Wild Mushrooms" party?

  19. <snip useful info>

    Publishing Cock-Ups I'm Glad I Have Not Made, No.1:

Some years ago one of the educational book publishers (like DK, though
not them), published an illustrated guide to UK flora, and then had to
recall all copies *very* fast. Reason? They'd published a series of pix
of poisonous mushrooms, and ditto of safe-to-eat ones, and got the
    captions the wrong way round.

Almost as good as "Trail" magazine's Mount Snowdon ****-up earlier this
    year.
