Not reinsuring with Auntie Carol as her prices have gone silly and
Green Flag won't cover bikes over 10 years old when abroad. Who does?

4 years since I last went abroad with the bike, but I always used to get
a week or twos cover with the RAC who didnt seem to be bothered by the
age, though they were not cheap, £40ish iirc for a week.

I had my renewal from aunti Carol and it was way over the top, so went
online and created a quote which was in excess of £75 better, so i took
    that one.

    Sorted.

I got one form a competitor using the same red star policy but
slightly different included benefits, and asked them why they were
over £150 more, and it they wanted one chance and one chance only to
match it, or at least be competitive. They got within £7 of it and I
    renewed.

I bought two visors from thevisorshop, on separate occasions. Not a
    hitch.

ADAC are happy to do EU wide on old cars, so they may do bikes...

I think their new policy must be to employ the lowest cost people from
the cheapest and most impoverished locations. I ended up speaking to
    a scouser!

I'v just renewed the policy on the 400 Four and added the MZ to it for
no extra charge. £122, and I get the overseas recovery too. What were
you being quoted, for what bike?

You've reminded me. Back when I was a DR (so more than a quarter-
century ago) I took out one of those policies that coughs a decent sum
of dosh for every day you're laid up in hospital plus more dosh for
convalesence time. It was something like three or four quid a month
    then, IIRC.
I've always kept it running, just in case, and I think the monthly
    premium is now about £10-11.

I'm very loath to bin it because I just *know* that if I do, I'll
    crock myself the following day.

I actually think that insurance has a supernatural preventive effect:
as long as you've got it, the Forces of Fate will ensure you don't
    need it.

Europ Assistance will cover bikes to 15 years (cars to 20).

£59 for European cover from http://www.quotelinedirect.co.uk/breakdown/
Nominated vehicle, no personal cover option.
The cover is very similar to what you get from Auntie Carol.

I've got it for the car. I can flip it to the bike for a European trip just
by logging on to their website and swapping the reg. no & printing a new
certificate. Then flip it back tot he car when I return as the bike has UK
    breakdown cover from Ebike.

The other option is Britannia Rescue. You can get a discount by joining the
CSMA, which is free, but still dearer than EA I think. Let me know if you
want to join the CSMA as they are offering a kickback for referrals.

With any policy, make sure the territorial limits cover where you plan to
go. Some include many countries not in the EU, others are EU only which is
a PITA if you intend to go via Switzerland or Norway. Most are EU plus
    those two.

They phoned me up to ask whether I wanted to renew my policy with
them, and then started waffling on about taking my details and passing
them on to their "business partners". I asked them why they had to
take my details given that I already had a policy with them - the
droid gave me some crap about their "business partners" wanting to
ensure freshness and quality of data. I pointed out that I still had
the same name, address and bikes as on the current policy, but they
insisted they had to run through a full set of details to pass onto
their "business partners". I concluded that they were idiots, and hung
up and barred their number from my mobile.

I'll be giving CN a bell in the near future, I think.

i somehow doubt that having any information about you passed on to their
"business partners" is in your interest. personally i would happily have
updated them with erroneous information including an undeliverable postal
address for the spam to be delivered to.

well, no - that's exactly my point.
I didn't think of that, unfortunately.

I'm pretty sure they do, but keep in mind that they have a mileage limit
on how far they'll recover you (it's in their T&C) and you have to pay
for anything above the limit IIRC. The problem is that the way some of
their international partners calculate the recovery distance. In the UK
they use one of the big ones (AA, I think) and those guys calculate the
distance for the roundtrip from their depot.

One of the guys on one of the forums I'm on (I think it was the 911
forum) got bitten by that and had to cough up quite a lot of money for
an 85 mile recovery that should've been well within the limit.

Please note that I'm not dissing the ADAC as all I know about their
service is positive (stepdad used to be a long-time member and their
call centre etc are always extremely helpful). It's just that some
people get caught out by the slightly different T&Cs.

OTOH, they don't seem to have a limit on how often you can get recovered
under their policy as long as it's not for the same fault again and
    again.

I still delight in packing junk mail into the reply-paid envelope and
dropping it into the letter-box, so the bastards pay twice for sending
me something I didn't ask for in the first place.

  18. We looked at replacing our permanent health & critical illness cover
recently. Although Axa is happy to continue with our current policy
(despite me developing T2 diabetes) they refused to cover me on a new
    policy..

Which would have made them more money. And had more restrictions on
what could and couldn't be claimed for.

  19. I've got quite bolshie recently with people asking for my name &
address details. And don't get me started on cancelling stuff - I don't
care that BarclayCard Card protection would like to know which solution
I currently use - the fact is that I want to cancel theirs. And
eventually the customer services rep on the other end of the phone got
the message - largely because (she having ignored my expressed desire to
not give them free marketing information) I then responded to each of
her questions with "please just cancel my cover".

It eventually worked. But not until she got quite miffed with me..
