I've been using www.Mappy.co.uk to plan routes in Europe for a while
now, and it's a pretty good resource.

However, it doesn't allow you to specify "No motorways" in your route.
    I've tried www.theaa.com and they're the same. www.rac.co.uk allows
it, but the results are strangely unusable.

Anyone know of anything else suitable?

If not, is Autoroute still the best software to buy for this sort of
thing, or (and I'm thinking of Blaney here) should I just work it out
    myself from a map?

And don't bother suggesting GPS, because I'm not interested, thanks.

I use Autoroute 2001 which is okay but starting to get out of date as
new roads appear. I tend to look at a real map and use Autoroute to
calculate distance so that I can plan overnight stops.

www.viamichelin.com has an "avoiding tolls" option

I have had this link in my favourites for some time. I've not checked
out the sites it recommends recently though - it may be crap as they
still have a link to Shellgeostar which has been absorbed into Michelin.

hmmm.. I have a program called focus route, but as it's a few years
old may not have all the latest amendments. If you already have
autoroute for europe then thats better. However I do prefer to check
the route on a map myself as well. Also helps me to remember it.

I'ts not big (it fits on a floppy (or maybe 2) so easily emailed if
    you wish.

yeah, I remembered about that one after posting.

It also lets you choose the "absolutely shortest route". which gives a
comparison against the fastest route between Calais and Frankfurt of
something like fastest: 375 miles in 5.5 hours -v- shortest: 350 miles
    in 10.5 hours.

Better then any Autoroute since though for Europe - it seems MS have been
taking features out of Autoroute, rather then putting them in.
General (ie 5 minutes browsing) concensuse is that 2001 is still the most
    usable version.

Never really use it, except to check the names of towns and stuff like
    that.
