RIDING at double the speed limit, "bending" road rules and "pushing
the limits" are just part of riding safely, according to many
    Australian motorcyclists.
An investigation into the behaviour of riders has revealed a belief
among many motorcyclists that breaking the law was actually safer than
    abiding by road rules.

According to the study by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau
(ATSB), "some riders considered (bending the road rules was) an
essential part of maintaining their safety".

"Most riders interviewed did not appear to regard riding at very high
speeds - (for example) more than double the speed limit - as
    intrinsically unsafe.

"The general consensus seemed to be that safe high-speed riding
involved planning the time and place so as to minimise risk."

    Quite right too.
In the right place and time, that's very true.
    Yup.

You're full of shit as usual Arfur. You haven't considered looking for
a brain donor have you? I'm sure there's a dead dog lying around
    somewhere.

    Double? <snigger>

Collecting the Blackbird this morning, I worked out that at a school
zone I could do seven times the legal limit. :)

What a load of crap. If stupid motorcycle riders didn't break the law
and weave in and out of traffic all the time, they wouldn't get mown
    down quite so regularly.
    Psychopathic lies.

Stick to something actually vaguely approximating the speed limits
    like the rest of us.
It *is* intrinsically unsafe. Hence dead riders everywhere everyday.
In other words you break the law and try not to get caught AND try to
    survive your stupidity.
People who ride motorcycles don't even have the intelligence of a dead
dog - how stupid would you have to be to indulge in an activity that
makes you hot, sweaty and uncomfortable, fills you mouth with dead
bugs, and sooner or later kills you or at the very least grates half
your skin off as you slide along asphalt at high speed?

    Fucking idiots.

Given that most motorcycle accidents have been the fault of the other
party, it makes your argument look a little stupid
    No Arfur, it's the truth
LOL, you haven't spent much time on the road have you Arfur?
The evidence says otherwise Arfur. Then again, reality aint your
    talent
I've had two accidents, both minor, and both while going well under
the speed limit. Explain that, retard :)
Given I've never had "dead bugs" in my mouth Arfur - we're not all
mouth-breathers like you. My bike aint uncomfy and I wear protective
    gear.
You've just described yourself very well Arfur. Now, take some valium
    and calm down, mmmkay?

Great article and well constructed. Clearly it constitutes a wonderfully
    balanced perspective.

At last it's time such people were given a reality check - we know that all
road speed limits are optimisied for all conditions, all types of motorist
and all conditions. It is also true that when you boil it down, speed is
the only thing that contributes to accidents, all other contributing factors
being easily shown to be negligible (ie. tailgating, inexperience,
    mechanical condition etc.).

Given this, why any sane individual would need to own/ride a machine capable
of exceeding the speed limit beggars belief. Sadly we are surrounded by
    such morons.

Actually, speed limits are designed around what it's administratively
feasible to enforce and publicise, which has only a rough correlation
with the actual safety of the speed in any specific context.
Because a vehicle that could only travel at the maximum allowable
speed would not really be serviceable when the need to change speeds
arose. An exception might be electric vehicles which have good
acceleration but limited top speed, but even here, they will be able
    to exceed some speed limits.

What's really needed is to reduce the number of vehicles on the road,
introduce rules that take full account of driver skill and adherence
to road rules, the state of the vehicle, traffic volumes etc, better
police actual road rules so that drivers assume they'll be caught
rather than that they'll get away with it, and to improve driver
    attitudes.

This is one of those things that I disagree with you on.

While I don't condone riding at double the speed limit, as a motorcyclist, I
frequently find it necessary to exceed the speed limit, briefly, to put some
room to mauver between me and the ditzy blonde in the Ford Capri talking on
her mobile while doing her makeup, or the dickhead in the BMW 300 shaving
    (saw this one this morning).
