It's not people, the speed limits are varied automatically according to road
    speeds and vehicle density.

    People like Ray, for example.

I'll be fucked if I'm going to take driving advice from someone who
(proudly) claims he's never experienced over or understeer and that a
    Rover 75 diesel is 'quick'.

  3. Well, yes. I was only stating what I reckoned the "thinking" was.
Driver behaviour on roads like that is less sensible than anything
you'd see in the chimp enclosure at the zoo. When the traffic gets to
that state, I reckon you can usually do 50% more than the average speed
simply by staying in Lane 1.

  4. They are not self-appointed. They are employed to do a job. They are
trained, assessed and monitored. They are not just pompous retired
bank managers who think they are better drivers than anyone else.
    Possibly, but irrelevant.

  5. Not at all. I would love lane discipline to be better. I just don't
like your "solution", which seems to involve self-righteous pillocks
informing on the rest of us.

I've used the M42 "4th" lane a few times, it actually works

You agree there is a problem, yet anyone who wants to do something is self
righteous - no wonder this country is going down the toilet.
Ok, your solution is to find people who have no interest in safer driving,
and someone who doesn't want to do anything about it.

    I despair.

So, another post where you agree there is a problem. Rather than having a go
at me for making a suggestion, how about making a realistic one yourself.

A chip on the shoulder and a complete lack of understanding, paired with a
deep seated stereotypical image. I observed many twenty year olds on the IAM
course. On open days, most of the drivers we assessed were under thirty.

If the police were to take drivers that had already passed an advanced test,
gave them extra training for the task and appointed them as 'motorway
support traffic officers, that would just about cover it.

As for your stupid assertion that I think I am better than anyone else, why
the fu-- did I bother taking several further driving courses? What the
advanced courses did for me, was to prove to ME that I had done what I could
    to be a safer driver.

So up yours you pompous twit. For goodness sake, anyone that tries to
improve what they do are pompous and show offs to people like you. There is
never a middle ground - christ, responses like yours make me sick.

He probably wouldn't take advice from garden center staff when buying a
flymo, because they havn't done an approach into Heathrow in fog.

Won't work. On the M42 stretch, the HS is used in congested conditions
to leave the motorway with no through road past the junction.

Timid f***ers and lorries in congested conditions WILL NOT and DO NOT
    use that lane.

I guess its because deep down, you know that some stereotype image of
a self appointed official will pop up from time to time waffling on
about how speed kills, overtaking kills, how you should always wait,
or give way, or some other such self invented twaddle.

Or maybe you'll take a dislike to him when he screams up to the rear
of your car with his out of focus headlights and worn tyres and starts
giving lectures about road safety with his beard and fluorescent
jacket as he mouths arguments about not being considerate to people on
the road as it confuses them, and the importance of watching and
reacting immediately to indicators while neglecting to actually
mention anything about observing what that big metal box attached to
    the indicators are doing.

Or perhaps we could have internet cretins, I mean, observers like you,
taking an instant dislike to someone because of their abrupt and
challenging nature and deciding that this means they're dangerous and
    take unnecessary risks.

I've left your example above, as ... well ... an example.

Accompanied by the sound of a chisel on slate
I'd be happy to sit on a bridge with a rocket launcher taking pot shots at
the MLOC. It'd make motorway travel much more fun. Remove the speed limit
and bomb the hell out of anyone who isn't getting a move on. A few weeks of
rockets and everyone would behave. Might be a few unlucky casualties but it
would all be helpful towards removing congestion, well, once they've cleared
    up the mess.
