  1. In an early Inspector Morse novel, Morse gives Lewis quite a ticking
    off, for referring to his Jag as "she": 'Everyone knows cars have
    nothing to do with women, Lewis'.

    No they're not. Locomotives are always "it" and have never been anything
    else. Steam, diesel or electric.

    But steam locos used to have some wonderful names did they not. Fair
    takes me back to the days when I 'cabbed namers' at Derby open days.

    Some industrial locos had delightfully personal male or female names,
    but I am sure your correct that they were always referred to as it (or
    worse).
