    <groan> Don't. I am definitely becoming my dad. I haven't taken to
wearing bow ties and calling younger women "my dear" yet, but it's
    only a matter of time.

If everyone knew that, we wouldn't have so many paranoid parents. I
keep telling my dear wife that, statistically[1], her biggest danger is
me but, generally logic doesn't come in to the equation.

[1] We're house hunting so a bit more than statistically some days!

John Higgins scribbled on the back of a napkin:
But it's clearly the paranoid parents that are the reason that the
18-25 age group is the most endangered given that all younger ones are
    locked up at home, no?

If he stopped nicking bikes it *wouldn't* happen again, surely? So he moved
to the US so he could continue nicking stuff without fear of retribution
from you and yours. What a dick :)

It doesn't need hundreds of studies. It doesn't even need one study.

If it worked as a deterrent, Death Row would be empty. It isn't. It
    doesn't.

While I agree to some extent - despite having had bikes nicked, cars
nicked and assorted property stolen over the years, I took the view that
they were just "things" and most were insured - there must have been
some degree of personal non-financial investment in the collection and
some of them were, presumably, genuine classics.

If a yob were to, say, have a go at the Mona Lisa with a razor, leaving it
in a similarly fucked state to some of these jags, would it be "only"
canvas and oil, with the same intrinsic value as a powder-paint effort from
    the local primary school?

Yet some posters comment on Tessa Jowell's so called lack of
intelligence. Those two make her look like Einstein.

Am I allowed to answer that or is it aimed at those who appreciate
such objects slightly more than I do?

I know I'd laugh like **** (1) if someone drew a moustache on the Mona
Lisa. I wouldn't find it funny if someone slashed it with a razor but
I wouldn't be shouting for the crim to be strung up.

    (1) In a "what a ****" sort of way.

I really think breaking someone's hands with a hammer is a much worse
    crime than stealing a bike.

The thief should have been subject to the due process of the law and
assuming no future a caution would IMO be a suitable punishment. Lozzo,
on the other hand, you deserved to do some serious time inside for that
and should be ashamed of yourself. You're worse than the bike thief.

I can remember being in similar positions when I was in my late teens
and also being concerned. If anything I feel a lot more (physically)
secure now because I'm confident that I'm less likely (demographically)
to be a target and am more assertive so am more confident I can deal
    with the situation.

Overall, yes. I don't know if this is the case with Dan though.

(and to be fair he used the phrase "apparent interest")

Y'know, although I can't condone what Lozzo did, I completely
understand it. When a scrote does something like this, knowing full
well that they'll be let off with community service, a caution or some
other ridiculous punishment BUT the victim is in no way recompensed
[1], then there is something seriously wrong with society [2].

Having my flat-mate "put the word around" about my new Zephyr 550 (when
I lived in Brixton) so that no one would touch it, was more reassuring
to me (at the time) than having the insurance on the bike. It sounds
    illogical, but there you are.

[1] Don't talk about that pittance of government compensation, as it's
a joke in general. Even then, why the **** shouldn't the scrote be made
to pay for the damages, etc. Even if it takes the rest of his fucking
    life.

[2] I recall reading that there were only one or two organisations for
the support of victims but umpteen for criminals. I wish I knew where I
read that, so that I could come up with the exact figures.
