Fairing vs no fairing...

    Anyonehave a (credible) theory on speed differences between running a
    (normally faired) bike with and without a fairing..?

    Only my NS500 scared the bejesus out of me today by indicating 135 (and
    still pulling) with me flat on the tank and no plastic panels whatsoever....

    Will it go faster with the plastics on or will it just not hurt my neck so
    much?

  3. In uk.rec.motorcycles, WavyDavy amazed us all with this pearl of wisdom:
    For mine having the fairing on made going fast easier but I can quite
    happily sit bolt upright at 150+ for several miles.

    You never saw it. That's the nicest description of it I've ever heard.

    "Fucking old nail" was the verdict of the sales bloke at Pineways when
    I PX'd it for my 750R.

  10. Some bikes are/were *slower* with fairings than unfaired. Not just
    sports bikes either.

    Almost every faired bike allows you to ride faster for longer because
    you don't get knackered by the windblast, which is not quite the same
    thing as saying a faired bike is faster.

    The Japs only really got their aerodynamics sorted out (if we're talking
    about firing for speed rather than comfort and protection) in the last
    few years).

    I thought it would do both: the improved aerodynamics sapping less engine
    power and protecting the rider.

    Whether its actually worthwhile in terms of styling v. benefit is
    debatable.

  13. There is virtually no aerodynamic benefit in a 1980s-style fairing. And
    some make the bike slower. Trust me.

    The drag - most of it - comes from the turbulence behind the rider. The
    aerodynamic wake. Like wiv aeryoplanes. Most of the rest comes from the
    front wheel.

    Now, if you can get the frontal area of the bike down, and narrow the
    fairing to a point ahead of the front mudguard, you'll have a case.

    Actually, dustbin fairings worked because they enclosed the front wheel,
    but they had other problems of their own.

    What about those Moto Guzzi adverts that showed wind-tunnels
    and mentioned aerodynamics? Or was that the 'seventies?
    And that red and green thing on Ducatis? It was on Hailwood's
    bike because it made it faster and the road bikes were replicas
    so there should have been some benefit.

  18. it will go slightly faster and accelerate slightly quicker with fairing
    fitted as it streamlines the air around the bike and you better

  19. Ah - memories.

    I once (briefly) had an XJ900 that somebody had stuck the biggest
    aftermarket fairing that they could find on..

    With the fairing on it just about topped 90. I got so hacked off with
    it that I took the fairing off and gave it another go - as it sailed
    past 120 (me flat on the tank and hanging on like grim death) I
    realised the fairing had to go.

    So I traded in bike+fairing for my first VFR.

    You've also got all the weight. Mine was noticeably more sprightly when
    I removed all the plastic. The nose and headlight on its own must've
    weighed at least 10kg.
