What would be a ballpark figure to replace or patch a sill on an old shape
(M reg) 5 door VW Polo and paint? £200+ painted?

I suspect it may be "sell it whilst it's still got an MOT" time.

Try phoneing a local replacement panel dealer such as Panel-On in Bristol.
If you are in luck there will be an oversill available which just gets
welded on the outside of the existing sill. This avoids the need to cut
out the old one with the body supported in a jig.

An hour with a MIG and a rattlecan fixed it for me on an SOFnord about
    10 years ago.

Depending on how big the hole is I'd be tempted to just cut out the
rusty bit and patch it instead of replacing the sill. The latter would
make sense on a more valuable car that you'd want to keep long term,
but not necessarily on a cheap-ish runabout.

Patching is usually the way to go. Polo sills genrally go at the rear wheel
arch joint and "mini" sills are available for that area. A full sill is
usually only needed if it's been twatted and left to rot over time.

Your 200 quid guestimate for a repair (+painting) is reasonable enough.
Depends on whether or not you can get a replacement that's as good as your
current vehicle for what you'd get for yours, plus the cost of the repair if
    you had it done.

I'd say 350 would cover the job start to finish.

It looks like it's been twatted at some point, as it's rusting roughly below
the B pillar, though I've not looked at all closely. Obviously if it goes
right through, it's an MOT fail.
Cheers for the info. I suspect it's time to get rid, as it's had a respray
in the past (cosmetic, rather than crash damaged), and none of the doors
have been refitted quite right. I suspect the car's only worth around
    £600-£700 with T+T.

And no, it's not my vehicle.
