    But why are people from Manchester so inordinately proud of the fact?

    That's a bite then. Honestly, I got fed up with British music scene
    circa 1977 and went Left-Pondian for a couple of decades.

    I fail to see why people would be proud of being from Manchester. My ex
    certainly insisted I told people I originated from Cheshire rather than
    Manchester. Joy Division and the Smiths are just soul destroyingly
    terrible. I've tried joining the music scene up here and it's
    impossible. You can't move for indie wankers trying to continue the dead
    'madchester sound'; I fucking HATE jangly telecasters.
    I've got a soft spot for Lowry paintings though.

    Whether you buy it or not its a common perception.

    It's not really a great deal different to how many other city dwellers
    see themselves - primarily industrial or poor cities.
