  1. Just a thought...

Have you ever managed to receive the V5 for any bike you've bought
before flogging them, having been distracted by another one?

  3. Not for long though...

Still, you appear to have good taste, and you're doing the rest of us
a favour I suppose, flooding the market with as-new used bikes.

I still haven't received the V5 for the SV I bought in January. I
emailed the seller and he told me he forgot to send it off...the twat.
It now needs taxing, good job I have the green section of the old V5.

Ahh, you've bought something of my pal Johhny 5 Pies.

Absolutely fucking astoundingly good guitarist, but he couldn't organise his
    way out of the house.

Better tell the lady in the PO who gave me a nice new tax disc this
    morning.

It helps when you haven't filled in any details at all on the green
    slip.

Only at the PO - according to the DVLA, you can use later on at a VRO
to get a tax disk if you're applying for a V5C at the same time. I'll
try to test that theory in the not too distant future as I could do
with a V5 for the one remaining Motosport.

    They're all cunts.

I bought another car for my daughter at the weekend. Naturally it came
without tax and equally naturally I only swapped the insurance from the
previous one to this one once I'd bought it. It took a week for the
    insurance document to arrive.

Got a call at work from my daughter asking whether the vehicle was taxed
because she'd been pulled over by some
    inadequate-of-a-special-constable.

I had a chat with him; "yes, I bought the car last Friday and it came
without tax. I've only just received the insurance document and will
tax it at the weekend, from the beginning of March".

The special constable, having (apparently) cautioned my daughter
proceeded to tell me that it was illegal to use the car without tax in
my situation and the fact I'd only just bought it and had not yet
received the relevant insurance document was no excuse.

So, apparently I was meant to just park the car off road until the tax
disk was sorted- and pay back tax for the privilege.

When I asked what happened if I had nowhere off road to park it he said
"I'm only doing my job sir". I toyed with the idea of winding him up
and letting my daughter take the flak but discounted this since I'd end
    up paying any fine.

The man was clearly a knob. Fancy giving a caution to an 18 year old
    girl under these situations.

    Grr.

I'm toying with the idea of issuing a complaint but it's probably
    pointless.

Is he right though, if you've just bought a vehicle are you not allowed
to use it without tax- even though you will be back-taxing it once the
    documents arrive?

Sadly the cuntstable is correct. You're committing the offence as you
have no tax. The fact you *intend* to tax it later and that tax will
cover the period in question doesn't alter the fact that it's not taxed
    at the time.

You have to remember that for most of us time is a linear construct...

I reckon you're unlikely to be prosecuted for it - and if you were you
have the defence that you later taxed it for the period in question...
Arsey prosecution might (might being the operative word) say that you
only back taxed it because you were caught out by the diligence of
    Officer Cuntstable.

In the old days, grandad, you got away with it. You were still technically
in breach, and you could get arseholes who would put you through it if they
caught you. See also "failure to display", and nitpicking about where on
the vehicle the Guinness label or beermat should be displayed.

Although I do like the notion of "instance gratification"...

Ive been prosecuted for it in the past when I took a bike that wasnt
taxed to work as my other one had broken down the night before.

went to court, explained the situation, gave proof that I taxed it the
    next day.

no fine but still had to pay costs which were more than the tax
    itself.

  14. I had the same - 28 odd years ago. Untaxed car that I was doing up and
had taken out the engine and gearbox etc. Had to move it out of the
garage for a few minutes for some reason (can't remember why) and local
old biddy called the rozzers who shot round (it was East Sussex) and
nicked me for no tax and tried for failing to maintain... Because I'd
removed the bonnet etc - (Triumph Spitfire) and therefore there were no
    lights on the front.

This was for my car pushed onto the grass verge at the end of a cul-de-
    sac.

Went to court and (like you) just got costs and a conditional discharge.

I was unlucky though - a young constable trying to make a name for
himself. The real local bobby came round after he heard about it and
gave me a bollocking for not ringing him to sort it out as soon as it
happened. He said he'd have educated the new chap a little as to how the
police work with the support of the local community.

  17. I've had a similar prob with the scooter. MoT'd, insured, but the
insurance papers got held up in the post. Took nearly two weeks to get
them. I couldn't tax it online, for some reason, despite having the
    green slip off the V5.

So I just rode it and decided I'd argue the toss if I got stopped. Which
    I didn't.

  18. The 400 Four I bought at the weekend - I toyed with the idea of taking
the plate off my existing 4/4, and slapping it on the one I'd bought, to
ride it home on. Oh, and the tax disc, of course.

In the end I was a good boy and used the trailer.

I'd have been happy to have bought 'emergency tax' were such a thing
    possible without the insurance certificate.
Oh, I don't give a **** whether they prosecute or not.

If the law doesn't give a reasonable grace period it's a fucking arse.
    There's a surprise.
