  1. If that Todd **** is flogging re-filled oxygen bottles and claiming them
to be as good as new, he needs stringing up.

Check out the version on a merkin mountaineering website

I know my opinion is worth **** all but as far as I'm concerned oxygen
should only be used on mountains in a life threatening situation. To
use it to artificially lower the height of a mountain to a level where
incompetents can get higher than their safe limit is just stupid and
if Henry Todd exploits peoples stupidity by flogging them oxygen then
he's doing nothing worse than a bike salesman selling a 1000cc
sportsbike to someone who's just passed DAS.

  3. Both the actions of total cunts, iow. Not because Todd is selling
oxygen, per se, but because of his dodgy practices. Until I read the
series of articles I wasn't aware of the cost of bottled oxygen - a very
lucrative trade, by the look of it. It seems Todd's re-filled bottles
routinely fail above 8000m (and he is fully aware of these occurances)
and whether climbers should be using oxygen or not is a seperate debate
    - the fact remains the man is a menace and a total ****.

Yes, as far as I can remember it, it's there to protect the third party
only. The policy rationale for this is that if there was no insurance, third
party would have a claim against the MIB which all insurers pay into.
Therefore, allowing cover to remain for third parties just spreads the risk
between insurers before it even gets to the MIB level.
No idea in this context. The only reason I knew what the RTA said about
third party liability was that I had to look at a terrorism wording in a
reinsurance contract which covered motor business and said reinsurer wanted
to consider what risk there was of being on the hook if someone nicked a
insured lorry, packed it full of explosives and drove it into Canary Wharf.

I just lifted a relevant snippet from this:

    http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_roads/documents/page/dft_roads_030394.pdf

"Because MIB’s activities are funded in full by the industry, this
£250 million represents an annual direct charge to honest motorists.
However, it underestimates the full costs they bear. The reason for this
is that many claims relating to incidents involving uninsured drivers
are settled directly by individual insurance providers. There are in
fact four other routes by which victims of uninsured motorists can
secure compensation. The first is a so-called ‘Article 75’ insurer,
where a policy is in place but the insurer could legally refuse to deal
with any claims because, for instance, the policy has been obtained
fraudulently. Under Article 75 of MIB’s Articles, insurers have agreed
to settle such claims directly. A second is referred to as a ‘Road
Traffic Act’ Insurer. In such cases the use of the vehicle is not
properly insured because conditions of contract have been broken, for
example because a joy-rider has caused damage in a stolen vehicle. Under
the Road Traffic Act insurers are obliged to settle such claims. Third,
an individual could secure recovery from his/her own insurer. Finally,
he/she could pursue a civil action against the liable party."

I had not previously researched the facts behind the simple warnings on
insurance company websites and paperwork about non-disclosure and other
breaches of terms possibly rendering your insurance 'invalid'. As Champ
    said, the detail is everything.

Write a list of mountains over 8000m, and you'll see just how big a
    problem this is.

  7. Suppose somebody was selling dodgy Gold Wing shocks? Eh, Eh? Shocks that
collapsed and pitched you off into a ditch near a Great British Landmark
just as you were approaching the last on your list.

Different tune you'd be playing then, my lad.

You've not ridden a GoldWing, have you? They're fitted as standard.
You hum it, and try to catch up.

Then narrow it down to the one visited by companies like Todd's and
you realise that the people using the 'dodgy' oxygen are almost always
those that have no idea about high altitude climbing and simply want
to do the biggest peaks the easiest way.

Don't even get me started on fucking helicopters...
