Feckin' chains

Many years ago I had the misfortune to have a fairly new chain snap at <eek>
    mph on a GSXR1100K.

In part this has directed me to shaft drive. A couple of years back I got
the F650 and at a later stage replaced the chain for a nice new DID O ring
    one with new sprockets etc.

Not really done that many miles on the new chain, and always ensured it was
well lubed, so was REALLY surprised to note today, when on a trip into the
local town, that one of the link sideplates [1] had decided to break around
the pin. Only held in place by the plate on the other side!!!

Luckily the only remaining bike shop in the town had the time to pop on a
    new chain for me...

    Feckin shite transmission method.

[1] not a rivetted link plate

evidence that it's wise to keep a close eye on drive chains. I
recently did a chain replacement on my CBR and I checked the connector
link of my other bike while I was at it ( a Blackbird ) The pins had
only barely been peened over so I had a good go with my new chain
    riveter tool !

The CBR has various features to stop a snapped chain for snagging
( the front sprocket has the speedo connected to the middle of it so
the chain can not come completely off, also the rear spocket has a
chain catcher thing ) I guess you have to assume the worst though if
    it does break eeekkk !!

    Over-tight chain. Classic symptom.

I sort of thought that but I'd checked it 'cos two days before I'd had new
tyres fitted and had double checked the tyre fitters settings.

Lucky for the bike shop more like; they could have just
replaced the duff link with a new rivet link, but then
that would have been a tenner rather than the cost of
    a new chain...

Nah I'd rather have new and be happy it's OK rather than bodge a potential
    problem
