Sorry to be anal about this but just to clarify a couple of things:

I have a friend who is adamant if I do this the Bon Ami will go straight
into the engine oil and destroy everything within weeks regardless of how
much i try and flush the oil afterwards - and thats if it doesnt just crack
    a piston ring first.

Is he correct? will doing this dramatically shorten the engine life?
Would it be likely to be a stuck ring? and if it is a stuck ring, will this
mean adding Bon-Ami would be unwise?
Will flushing the oil remove what does get in?

Sorry about the potentialy stupid questions, but I want to be sure about
things before I do anything and weigh up any risks. This potentially could
save me thousands I guess, but I dont want it potentially costing me alot
    more due to trying it

Thanks for everybodys help and patience sofar, Have a safe and happy Xmas
    all

    Regards
    Daniel

Do people still believe this in the 21st century?

Find a reputable mechanic in your area and go and get an opinion. If you can
not strip an engine down yourself pay for a professional.
