Festive Fettling (quite long)

Arrived home tonight to find m'boy and his trusty sidekick had commandeered
SWMBO's garage and had started to dismantle the TS50, so I donned my trusty
    oldest clothes and joined in.

    Things found:
Carb not connected to airbox (dismantled, cleaned and reassembled)
Air filter disgusting, tried to rinse it with petrol but it dissolved (puts
    new filter on list)
Sump oil drained, sort of brown colour, but still slippery with no gritty
bits (this is a good sign).
Sump drain plug needs new copper washer (adds to list)
Petrol tank drained and rinsed, some rust evident but not too alarming.
Loud end can sort of fell off (now fettling and repainting the original
quiet one, much to m'boy's disgust).
Exhaust looks a bit bodged where it joins the cylinder head (suggested
soaking in copious quantities of releasing fluid before attacking with
spanner, so added Plus Gas to list).
Removed dying battery (adds new one to list)
    Added HBOL to list.

All in all a good evening's work, and strangely theraputic after an
    exceptionally shite day at work.

That's how spannering is supposed to be.

    Best of luck, fella ;-)

I'm itching to get to halfords to a) see if there's a sale on, and b)
get me some proper tools. After that, it's every SOC for itself.

I had a feeling that the oil would be different due to it being a 2 stroke,
thanks for confirming it. I told m'boy that starting to dismantle the bike
without a manual was a bit like playing chicken, and have suggested that
getting a HBOL be a priority so we at least have a fighting chance of
putting it back together as Mr Suzuki intended.

  5. Hang about - this may be utter bollocks. Many Jap two-strokes use
ordinary 10/40 engine oil in their gearboxes. Some use gear oil, but
many Jap strokers I've owned use straight engine oil. I'm pretty sure my
    RD350 power-valve did, for example.
    You aren't, as it were.....

Bet you can't beat the £2.99 set of spanners I picked up at our local
one: should have retailed at £69.99!

In Lozzo's absence, all the 2 strokes I've owned have used normal 10-40W
bike oil in the gearbox. The only other stuff I've used was on my tuned
RD500, which had motor crosser gearbox oil in as recommended by Stan
    Stephens.

  9. Mmmmm. Why does mine usually go more like "socket to bolt, doesn't want
to turn, turn you dolt, turn!, slip, hit knuckle open, round of bolt,
    curse, repeat"?

    SOBs, mmmmm.

Because, Brother Merijn, you do not follow the SnapOn path. The one
true way of shiny chromey spanners and sockets, each finely finished
and attuned to the Flank Drive way.

Hie thee at once, at speed, brooking no distraction or interruption,
to a Man In A Van bearing the Holy SnapOn logo and there offer up your
skin, your back teeth and you firstborn child and you will be rewarded
with a set of tools fit for use by Gods and Greasemonkeys.
    ShiteOldSpanners, more likely.

Skin, back teeth and firstborn, that's not going to get you more than a
    10mm combi from Snap-On. I hear they're doing a good deal on a 1/2" socket
set for only one limb and a grandparent though.

  14. ShiteOldMZs use EP80/90 gear oil, IIRC.

I can quite happly say I've never had the pleasure of changing the oil on
    an MZ.

Apparently Royal Enfields gearbox's are filled with grease...

Bad form and all that TOG, but could you possibly confirm where one could
procure some K&N Filter Foam. ISTR you swear by it as an alternative to
carpet underlay, but I CBA to Google for it (2nd glass of Tempranillo
cutting in now). Also, any idea where I can get a copper washer for the
sump plug from (sorry about this, but my previous experience of shite old
mechanical devices is limited to cars, and that was about 20 years ago).

    TIA

  18. I just bought mine from my local dealer (Sunami of Morden), who keep it
in stock. About a tenner for a big sheet - that was enough to do the
GT380, the Benly and the Monkey Bike.

If you can't locate any, I s'pose I can always buy a sheet for you and
    lob it in the post.

Try http://www.bitzforbikes.co.uk/products.php for the filter foam but
phone them rather than order on-line. They have loads of stuff
listed for the TS50. I've used them for bits for the RS200 and they seem OK

Heh, cheers for the offer, I may well come back to you on that one.

Any ideas on the copper washer?, the boy has presented me with a fibre tap
washer procured from the local hardware store which is deeply disturbing.
