Be very, very, careful. This isn't a good strategy for general attitude
to work... and it could be hanging about for *years*.

It's really dangerous to start viewing a redundancy package as some form
    of deferred pay.

It pretty much passes by the railways and TU movement. Bonus.

Strange. I wasn't aware it was happening today. Well, I was
peripherally aware something was going on but not sure when

I did see some people trying to flag cars down to sell them cakes when I
nipped off to a pub at lunchtime for someone's leaving do, but that's
    all I saw.

Mine goes in the box nearest the door - I suspect, as does the majority.

It wasn't too bad - I managed to make a tea when TW did his bit and I
    quite like Ronni Ancona [1]

I was impressed by St Stephen's chairing given it was live and run to the
    minute.

I had a bit of a blood to the head moment yesterday, when someone
suggested that he really shouldn't need to learn new skills as he was
just entering his last ten years.

This is turning into a rather challenging environment.

  7. Heh. I remember being at the blunt end of a company like that and
receiving my pay cheque at 3.35 on a Friday afternoon, to ensure that it
couldn't be paid in until Monday morning (this was a long time ago:
    short banking hours, etc).

That was just excellent. Last night was my first real exposure to her
and I suspect I'll be looking for more.

Wasn't it just. If she did that off the top of her head, which I
assume she did, she's got a brain to match her already immense talent
    as a mimic.

I and haven't actually "switched off". It's more the safety of a
redundancy cheque vs going somewhere that might end up being less
secure in the current climate... particularly as work in my field is a
bit thin on the ground locally.
Thankfully I'm not viewing it as deferred pay, more a safety net,
more as a budget to adjust my skillset, and skill-up in in whatever is
in demand at the time. Moving house to somewhere more expensive in
the current climate is a bad idea, and that's what I'd end up needing
to do to find work in a similar field.

  11. Supermarkets here are plagued by tin rattlers at the doors, often
sitting at a desk, ffs - it's not as bad as it used to be a couple of
years ago, when there was one nearly every day, but there's still one
there a few times a month.

I wasted a couple of years hoping for a redundancy pay out when I
really should have punched my ex boss in the face and walked out.

A better way to approach getting a spot of 'deferred pay' is to go for
the mental illness approach (1) and blame it on work induced stress.

Have 6 months off on the club (2) and when it's time to go back you
need to walk in looking all happy and relaxed but as soon as your boss
appears you instantly start shaking and vomit over your desk.

Go back to your doctor and tell him exactly what's happened and wait
for an appointment with a specialist. Sooner or later your company
will phone asking when you intend to return to work and as soon as the
calls over go straight in and sit shivering at your point of work.
Ensure everyone knows you've been bullied into returning, vomit on
your desk and go off sick again.

Sooner or later they'll bin you and that's the point where you try for
    a cash.

    (1) Fluffy bunny disease.

    (2) Whatever the point is where you drop off full pay.

So you're just sitting there in a nice little comfort zone safe in the
knowledge that if they ever decide to **** you off you'll get a
    payout.

When my previous employer decided to move my base from Northants to
York they refused to offer me redundancy but once I'd signed my new
contract my immediate boss told me that if I'd just refused to accept
a move of over 15 miles they had to pay me out.

I wish. I'm sitting in a bit of a high pressure zone, knowing I'm
busy, but on an executive whim the whole thing could be canned and
sent offshore if we don't give the business the cost savings it's
    looking for.

....but with a small safety net.

    Globalisation rocks.

Yeah. Stick to somewhere that can lose 4 billion quid in a year.

The future's bright. Oh, no, that's the other one.

Same words as were used on a radio show (by her I suspect) a year or two
back. Remember the story of Obscurity from then, but can't remember the
    exact show.

I'm now on eight years, FFS. And 6.5 of that in the same role.
Previous maximum in one job was about two years. And with a total of
    30+ jobs/contracts in the previous 15 years I was averaging just 6
    months a pop.

No regrets though, I wouldn't go back to contracting for even double
    the money.

I've just ticked over 4 years with mine.

It's the longest ever period of employment I've had without being made
    redundant.
