When I got the Fantic MOT'd a few weeks ago I forgot to take the V5, so
they read the number off the frame to stick in the 'puter instead. Well
it turns out the frame number doesn't match the one on the V5, so the
    DVLA are now 'investigating' it.

I don't know if the V5 number got screwed at some point during an
address change, but I do know there's nothing hookey with the bike,
having owned it for 22 years (& my dad owned it for 4 years before me).

The DVLA are now saying I'll probably have to take the bike in to be
inspected. Never having done that before, what can I expect to happen?
They won't tell me what the results may be. If there's any chance at
all they may seize it, I need to get the (somewhat valuable) engine out
first & pretend it's blown up or something.

That's more likely to result in problems than not, I'd guess..

Go and get another ticket with the correct frame number then punt the
    bike out asap.

I suspect doing that would scream "I'm guilty of something" to the DVLA.

Mebbe but it's perfectly plausible with a 31 year old 2-stroke.

Happened to me once, took the bike to the local DVLA office, a man took
a carefull look with a magnifier and sent me on my way. A few weeks later
a new V5 arrived in the post with the correct frame number which also
    matched the engine number.

    No big deal.

OTOH if there is a clone out there somewhere with the same number there
    could be some hassles ahead.

I had to take the Busa to be inspected when I changed the reg. no.
It's fairly straight forward. I suspect it'll be at Theale and they'll
just check the frame no. and engine no.

You could put the correct number from the frame on to the V5 and send
it off to be amended and see if that goes without a hitch. I think
they say they want proof for changes like that, but you might get away
    with it!

I didn't know you could get an MOT without them seeing the V5.My local
    place
    insists on it.

I did wonder if it was just a case of checking the stamped number looks
    kosher (which it does).

What engine would be in it when you present the bike though?

We're just in the process of trying to do it with my son's bike. There's
certainly a box you can fill in with a new number so we filled it in and
sent it. I'll let you know how we get on!

Certain the MoT people didn't just misread the odd character? Was it
wildly different to what is on the V5 or just subtly?

I had a good one like this about two years ago.

I'd bought a bike which turned out to be a grey import.

The V5 only had the last six digits of the chassis number on it -
apparently this is something quite common when it comes to grey imports
    and the like.

Also, the V5 didn't state what model Honda it was, again something
apparently quite common when it comes to V5s relating to grey imports.

When I sold the bike on, the chap who bought it consequently HPi'ed it
and came back to me ranting about how the check had comeback showing
that the bike had been scrapped in 2000 and had finance still owing on
it due to a default in 2006.

Obviously he wasn't very happy so I got him to send me a copy of the
report so I could look into it further, and sure enough it showed the
    above.

However... it turned out that the finance default was on a caravan with
the same six digit chassis number as stated on the VFRs V5, and the
scrapped vehicle was something like a 1970s Honda C90.

So I contacted HPI and they managed to update their records to remove
the flag for the finance, but said they couldn't do anything about the
flag relating to the alleged scrapping and that I'd need to contact DVLA
to get the V5 changed to reflect the full chassis number of the bike,
but if there were any more problems with this being flagged up, any
interested party could contact them and they would clarify that this
entry didn't relate to the bike.

No idea whether the new owner did follow this up, but I did say to HPI
that if they were going to be boasting about how accurate the
information they hold on a vehicle is, they might want to factor in a
bit more cross referencing on their databases when generating reports to
avoid similar situations arising in the future.

Anyway... although there was nothing iffy about the bike, I still think
it would have culminated in DVLA doing as they have in your case, and
requesting it be presented to them before they'd amend the V5.

Hate to admit it but crn's actually right.

I had the same thing - bike I'd owned for years, had the wrong frame
number on the V5. It was very easy to sort out - took it to a VOSA place
(in Newbury IIRC), they inspect the frame, check the number. Shortly
    thereafter, bishbashbosh new V5.

They've had a lot of this since the computerised MOT.

And when I bought my brand new Sprint in 2008 it was registered as a
ZX7, only found out when i traded it in for the new one last Dec, I had
even taxed it once as well, dealer contacted DVLA and all sorted.
